Lees canvas, full of allegories, is critically conceived and in some respects close to the painterly spirit of Jorg Immendorff. Its cartoon-like pictures are further reinforced by its allegories that look like a bunch of grapes. ● In his serial work Step the artist reconstructs both historical and realistic matters, as if to document them and represents dialectical aesthetics in the condensed theme. He sees the world as an eventually ever-changing being. His view of history remains fundamentally optimistic and founded on an evolutionary enhancement.

All kinds of elements Lees work conveys - bizarre, grotesque images, the icons overwhelmed by visionary, illusory delusions, critical and cynical messages on social realities, disorienting confusion and gloomy political, social realities are exploited to reconstruct a variety of realities. Lees work carries no apparently political messages but poignantly presents the true nature of contradictions in this world. The main characters of his paintings are not the strong but the weak such as pregnant women, war refugees, activists, fetus and the artist himself.

The artist himself appears in some of his works. The setting of himself as the subject of his own art tells of his messages critical and resistant to a dichotomic view of the world. Also discovered in his works are widespread eye images that are likely to appeal something. The intense look of these eye images try to have a conversation with the viewer. 이렇듯 복잡하기 이를 데 없는 작가의 화면은 마구 얽힌 실타래처럼 복잡한 현실을 재구성 방식을 통해 다채롭게 방영하고 있다. 물론 작가의 화면은 현실에 대한 단순한 재현과는 거리가 먼 재구성이다. 재구성이 기계적 재현보다는 오히려 현실의 본질을 더 효과적으로 전하고 있음을 확신하고 있는 듯하다. 바로 여기에는 작가 특유의 현실 인식과 상상력, 표현력 등이 뒷받침되어야 가능한 일이다. 작가 화면의 장점은 현실의 문제를 거침없는 비판과 알레고리적인 우화들이다. ■ 이재언
