2014년 세라믹창작센터 5기 입주작가들은 짧게는 3개월 길게는 8개월 정도 함께 생활하며 작업에 대한 서로의 생각을 나누어 왔다. 그들은 같은 공간 안에서 작업하며 자신들의 작업 과정과 기법을 공개하고 서로 배우는 시간을 가졌다. 이러한 과정을 통해 작가들은 재료를 다루는 방식과 접근 방법, 작업에 대한 다양한 개념을 공유하고 장르를 초월하여 진지한 고민과 성찰의 시간을 보냈다. 그 결과 입주작가들 사이에 활발한 상호작용이 일어났고 작가들은 삼삼오오 모여 한 해 동안 여러 전시에 참여하기도 했으며 협업을 통한 실험적인 작업도 시도하였다. 이번 전시 『인터체인지 Interchange』展은 작가들 간의 상호 교류를 통해 탄생한 작업의 성과물을 보여주는 전시가 될 것이다. ● 성정원 작가는 '시간'과 '관계'에 대해 탐구한다. 이번 전시에서 그녀는 스스로에 대해 '제1의 관계'로 규정하고 그에 대한 개인적인 해석을 옴니버스 형식을 빌려 전개하고 있다. 사회와 문화, 시간과 공간의 경험에 영향을 받을 수밖에 없는 자신 스스로에 대한 관계를 시각적 언어를 통해 관조한다.

유은석 작가는 사회적 이슈, 환경문제, 역사적 진실 혹은 거짓에 대한 농담을 던지며 관객들로 하여금 그 내면의 진실을 유추하도록 한다. 그는 역사적으로 유명한 건축물들을 작업의 소재로 다루며 언어유희를 통해 정치적이고 사회적인 문제들에 대해 비판적인 시각을 제안한다.

유의정_액체시대(Liquid Time)_세라믹, 브론즈, 데칼, 골드 러스터_190×85×85cm_2014

유의정 작가는 전통적인 기법과 형식을 바탕으로 이 시대를 살아가고 있는 현대인들의 욕망과 사회 현상 등을 기록하는 작업을 해오고 있다. 이를 위해 작가는 동시대 소비문화를 대표하는 스타벅스, 맥도날드, 프라다, 나이키, 애플 등의 로고를 차용하고 사회적, 정치적 이슈들이 담긴 이미지와 혼합하여 도자매체에 기호적인 의미로 표현한다.

이선희_앓던 모든 것_수거한 옷 재단 후 뜨개질, 사진에 색연필_가변설치_2014

이선희 작가는 헌 옷가지들을 수거한 후 뜨개질을 하는 작업을 해 오고 있다. 그녀의 뜨개질은 나와 타인, 내부와 외부, 현실과 이상 등 세상에 공존하는 모든 것들을 엮어나가는 행위로 다양한 관계 속에서 균형을 찾아가는 작업이다. 이번 전시에서 작가는 기존의 작업 방식에서 한 걸음 나아가 재료에 대한 탐구와 실험적인 작업을 새롭게 선보인다.

이윤희_신전_자기_170×240cm_2013

이윤희 작가는 수많은 몰드에서 뽑아낸 다양한 형태의 조각들을 조합하여 한편의 서사를 만든다. 이 서사는 작가가 지어낸 이야기속의 소녀(주인공)가 행복을 찾아 여행을 떠난다는 내용이다. 소녀는 신이 내린 많은 고난에 맞닥뜨리게 되고 여정의 끝에서 진정한 자아를 찾고 비로소 평안을 얻는다. 이 과정에서 작가는 욕망과 불안, 치유의 과정을 그려 내고 있다. 그녀의 모든 작업들은 기본적으로 이러한 이야기를 바탕으로 진행된다.

이지연_호기심상자_MDF에 아크릴채색_125×75×65cm_2014

이지연 작가는 라인 테이프와 아크릴 물감을 이용하여 '기억 속의 공간'을 그리는 작업을 한다. 작가의 호기심에서 출발한 '기억 속의 공간'은 끊임없이 증식, 분열되며 시작도 끝도 없는 미지의 공간으로 탈바꿈된다. 이번 전시에서 작가는 평면 속에 존재하던 상상 속의 공간을 확대 설치하여 관람객들이 직접 공간을 체험해 볼 수 있도록 한다.

이지영_거기에는 모두가 질서와 아름다움, 사치와 고요 그리고 쾌락_ 쉬폰 커튼, 시트지_가변설치_2014

이지영 작가는 도시화에 의해 빠르게 변화하는 풍경과 자본의 가치회로에서 배제되어 도태되는 것들에 대한 관심을 가지고 작업을 진행한다. 작가는 이번 작업에서 작가의 주변 장소에 대한 풍경들 - 서울의 도시 풍경과 미술관이 있는 시골(진례)의 골목길 풍경 - 에서 서로 상반되게 보이는 것들과 닮아 있는 것들에 대한 이야기를 작가가 수집한 오브제를 통해 환기(喚起)시켜 보여준다.

정필승_변화를 추구하는 미적표현방법 Yellow flower_캔버스에 아크릴채색_각 27×22cm_2014

필승 작가는 관람객과의 소통을 위한 매개체를 만드는 작업을 해오고 있다. 그는 관람객들과 소통하는 방법으로 퍼포먼스를 벌이거나 인터렉티브한 작품을 설치한다. 이번 전시에 설치된 24장의 드로잉들은 작가가 설치한 최초의 연출에서 관람객들이 원하는 위치로 변경하도록 유도하는 작업이다. 작가는 관람객과의 이러한 관계를 통해 시각적인 즐거움을 이끌어내고자 한다.

조셉 하웰 시빌리 Joseph Howell Sivilli_Infinite Complexity through Infinite Time_ fired clay, raw clay, plaster, grass seeds, wood..,etc_2013

조셉 하웰 시빌리(Joseph Howell Sivilli) 작가는 창조와 파괴의 역설적 순환에 관심을 가지고 작업을 진행한다. 그는 물질적이고 생물학적인 힘의 줄다리기 사이에서 그가 만든 작품이 서서히 붕괴되어 가는 현장을 연출한다. 이를 위해 그는 흙으로 그릇의 형태를 만들고 표면에 씨앗을 뿌린다. 작가는 주기적으로 표면의 상태를 관찰하며 씨앗이 잘 자랄 수 있도록 환경을 유지하기도 하며 물리적인 힘을 강제해 표면에서 자라난 풀들을 파괴하기도 한다.

프리야 선드라발리 Priya Sundaravalli_Winter's Blossoms_ ceramics, powder-coated iron bowls_203×203cm_2013

프리야 선드라발리(Priya Sundaravalli) 작가는 자연적인 것들로부터 영감을 받아 작업을 진행한다. 한국에서의 그녀의 작업은 한국과 관계된 모든 것들 - 계절의 변화, 벚꽃과 목련나무의 꽃, 논의 풍경과 미술관 주변의 모습들, 한국의 민화와 판소리 그리고 화산섬 제주도와 한국 도자기의 소박한 아름다움 등등 - 에 대한 관심으로부터 시작되었다. 그녀는 레지던시 기간 동안 한국에서 영향 받은 것들을 도자 작품으로 승화(昇華) 시켜 선보인다. ● 이번 세라믹창작센터 입주작가 보고전의 주제인 교류(Interchange)는 레지던시 기간 동안 중점을 둔 키워드이다. 입주작가들 사이에서 스스로 일어난 능동적인 교류야말로 융복합 시대라고 말하는 요즘에 꼭 필요한 것이기 때문이다. 끝으로 올해의 레지던시 프로그램을 마무리 하는 이 전시가 작가들에게 성장의 밑거름이 되고 한 걸음 앞으로 나아가는 계기가 되었으면 하는 바람이다. ■ 김승택

In 2014, for the fifth time, resident artists at the Ceramic Creative Center have lived together for 3 to 8 months while exchanging views on their work. They worked in the same space and shared their work processes and techniques, learning from each other. Through this process, the artists learned how to handle materials, choose relevant approaches, and share diverse concepts, often going beyond boundaries of genre in search of meaning and time for introspection. ● As a result, there have been active interactions which led to joint participation in various exhibitions, and they have attempted some experimental works through cooperation. The current exhibition entitled Interchange will be a new venue for these artists to show what they have learned through interactions. ● Artist Sung Jungwon investigates the meaning of time and relationship through her work. For this show, she defines relationship of her own as The First Relation, and unfolds her stories in an omnibus format. She represents what she observes the relation influenced by society, culture, and temporal and spatial experiences in her own visual language. ● Artist Yoo Eunsuk uses humour to cast light on social issues, environmental problems, and historical truths and lies, letting the visitors come to their own conclusions as to the hidden truth. He has chosen to use historically famous architecture as his medium, and proposes a critical view on political and social problems through a play on words. ● Although employing traditional techniques and forms, Artist Yoo Euijeong records the desires of contemporary men and women and related social phenomena. For this purpose, he borrowed logos from Starbucks, McDonald's, Prada, Nike, and Apple that represent contemporary consumption culture and mixes them with images imbued with social and political issues, to add symbolic representations to the ceramic medium. ● Artist Lee Sunhee collects old clothes and knits them together. Her knitting is an act that weaves together elements that coexist: interior and exterior, reality and ideal, and the relationship between herself and others in search of a balance of diverse relationships. In the current exhibition, Lee goes one step further, from existing methods to an exploration of materials and experimentation. ● Artist Lee Yunhee generates an epic by combining diverse forms that are created from plaster moulds. This epic represents a journey in search of happiness for a heroine that the artist has created in a story. The girl is confronted with many hardships that God had in store for her, and she finally finds her true self at the end of the journey, feeling comfort for the first time. In this process, the artist draws from her desires and anxiety and a process of healing. All of Lee's works progress through this kind of storytelling. ● Artist Lee Jiyeon draws a 'space in memory' using line tapes and acryllic. The 'space in memory' that sprung out of her curiosity is transformed to an unknown space that has no beginning or end while multiplying and splitting endlessly. In the current exhibition, the artist expands the imaginary space that exists in a her paintings so that the visitors can experience it directly for themselves. ● Artist Lee Jeeyoung carries out her work with an interest in Seoul's rapidly changing urban landscape, including those that are being excluded through a capitalistic value system. In the current exhibition, Lee tells a story contrasting the lives lived by those in Seoul's urban sprawl with the rural subsistance on display in Jillye, the location of the Artist-in-Residency program. She also explores any common threads that can be found between these two lifestyles through objects that she has collected, and comparing it to her own experiences through her family's transition into modernity. ● Artist Sung Jungwon investigates the meaning of time and relationship through her work. For this show, she defines relationship of her own as The first relation, and unfolds her stories in an omnibus format. She represents what she observes the relation influenced by society, culture, and temporal and spatial experiences in her own visual language. ● Artist Pil-seung communicates with the audience both through performance and interactive works. In the current exhibition, the artist invites the visitors to move 24 drawings that he has installed to any place that each visitor wants. Through this kind of relationship with the visitors, the artist wants to draw out visual pleasure. ● Artist Joseph Howell Sivilli carries out his work with an interest in paradoxical cycles of creation and destruction. He creates a scene that shows a gradual collapse of works that he created in a physical and biological tug of war. For this purpose, the artist creates a vessel form using clay and sprays seeds on its surface. He observes the state of the surface regularly, maintains the environment in such a way that the seeds can grow well, or applies physical force to the surface in order to destroy the grown up grass. ● Artist Priya Sundaravalli draws inspiration from nature to carry out her work. Most of her works in Korea have started with an interest in Korea itself, including seasonal change, cherry blossoms and magnolias, the rural landscape, Korean folk painting and pansori, the volcanic island of Jeju, and the simple beauty of Korean ceramics. During her residency period, she sublimated the influence she has received in Korea to works of ceramic art. ● Interchange, the topic of the current exhibition of the resident artists at the Ceramic Creative Center is a keyword on which an emphasis was placed during the whole residency period. That is because the proactive interchange that occurred among the resident artists spontaneously is the kind of entity that is really required to an era that is commonly known as the era of convergence and integration. Lastly, it is our sincere wish that the current exhibition that completes the residency program for this year can serve as a seedling for future growth of new artists and provides an occasion for their continued progression. ■
