The Polka-dot Garden

'나는 주로 변형될 수 없는 최소의 조형요소를 바탕으로 작업을 시작한다. 그리고 반복의 단계를 거치면서 사고의 방향을 거듭 바꾸고, 우연을 통해 예측하지 못했던 표현의 새로운 통로를 찾는다.' (작업노트, 2014) ● 통인동에 위치한 작업실 공간은 50년 된 한옥이다. 그때그때 필요에 의해 잘리고 다닥다닥 덧대어져 본래의 마당은 상가가 되었고, 창문은 뒷집 벽과 마주하게 된 이상한 구조다. 나는 늘 빛이 부족한 이곳에서 지붕에 구멍을 뚫어 쏟아지는 빛을 보는 상상을 하곤 한다.「The Polka-dot Garden」은 빛과 색을 모티브로 시간과 공간, 사람과 자연, 패션과 그래픽의 병합을 시도하는 작업이다. 작업실 내의 다락공간을 정원이라는 가상의 공간으로 상상하면서 9개월여 동안 원형의 패턴을 하나하나 벽에 그리는 작업을 시작으로, 인공의 빛을 더하고 패션과 영상을 추가하면서 매체들 사이의 교차된 편집을 시도했다. 빛에 대한 결핍에서 시작한 이번 작업은, 빛과 색의 혹은 매체와 매체 사이의 선택과 조합에 따라 본래의 모습이 다르게 보이는 시각적인 변화와 착시를 이용하여 일상의 익숙한 모습들을 새롭게 보고자 했다. 원래의 형태를 변형하거나 훼손하지 않고 규정된 틀을 유지하면서 변화할 수 있는 방법을 찾는 과정에서 본질적인 것과 그것에 잠재된 조형적 가능성을 실험하고자 했다. ● 이번 전시에서는 그 동안 해왔던 평면적인 그래픽 작업에서 나아가 입체적이고 다층적인 결과물을 만들어 내고자 했다. 그래픽에서 패션으로, 패션에서 미디어와 공간으로, 공간에서 다시 사진과 인쇄물로 그리고 전시를 통해 다시 공간으로, 50년동안 지속적으로 변화되었을 나의 작업실처럼 선택과 재조합의 과정을 거쳐 일상의 시간과 공간에 상상의 이미지를 덧대어 본다. ■ 이수인

'I usually begin my work with the least changeable element of a subject as base. Then through the process of repetition, I shift the direction of thought, and by chance find an unpredicted avenue of expression.' (Working Notes, 2014) ● My workspace, located in Tongin-dong, is a fifty year old hanok (a traditionally styled Korean house). Over the years, it has been cut up and added on to when needed. As a result, the original yard is now a commercial area, and the windows have an odd structure that face the wall behind the house. Inside this dimly lit space, I often imagine myself cutting a hole in the roof to let the warm sunlight burst through. The Polka-dot Garden is a piece that represents the motif of light and color: It attempts to merge time with space, people with nature, and fashion with graphics. While visualizing the attic of my workspace as a virtual garden, I started this piece by individually drawing circular polka-dot patterns on the wall for 9 months. Eventually, I found myself adding artificial light, along with images and fashion elements, to explore the possibilities of cross-medium compilation. Inspired by the lack of light, the piece portrays the original shape in a different manner based on the selection and combination of color and light or the various elements of selective mediums. Through the use of visual changes and illusions, it aims to look at previously familiar perceptions in a new way. Without changing or damaging the original form, I wanted to find a way to transform subjects while keeping intact their defined framework. The process allowed me to experiment with the innate nature and potentials of these subjects of work. ● In this exhibition, I went beyond my usual flat graphic works to create multi-dimensional and multi-layered pieces. Moving from graphics to fashion, from fashion to media and space, and then from space to photographs and prints, the exhibit eventually returns to this physical space. Through selection and recombination, I recreate an imaginary construction of everyday life over time and space, just like my workspace that has been transforming continuously for the past 50 years. ■ LEESOOIN
