탄생이 몸의 시작이라면 죽음은 몸의 끝이다. 죽음은 비근하지만, 삶과 동떨어져 정확히는 나와는 동떨어져 있는 것이라 외면당하거나 영원히 살 것처럼 삶을 욕망하기에 직시하기 힘들다. 즉 죽음은 불안이자 공포이고, 상처이자 터부(taboo)이다. ● 똑같은 평수, 똑같은 비문, 똑같은 조화까지 아파트 평수, 구조, 계약처럼 무덤이 삶의 형태와 닮아있다. 삶의 끝, 죽음이란 과연 무엇인가라는 질문을 시작으로 공동묘지를 거닐면서 정작 죽음이나 망자(亡者)에 대한 애도보다 마치 살아있듯 죽음을 지우고 삶을 덧입힌 모습을 본다. ● "날 따라 오지 마세요(Don't follow me)"는 죽은 자가 산 자에게 날 따르지 말라는 충고인 동시에 날 따르게 되어 있다는 무언의 손짓이며, 정작 보이지 않는 것에 대한 막연한 불안을 느끼며 무연고인이 읊조리는 주문이자 기원이다. ■ 이선애

Birth is the beginning of the body and death is the end of the body. Janus of life, death is familiar, but is usually disregarded, specially far away from my life. It's hard to face the death because people currently have the desire to live the eternal life. That is, death is anxiety and horror, and wound and taboo. ● I walk around the cemetery where I start with the fundamental question -what the death is and what the tombs with the the time standing still is. Soon I meet the life neutralized sorrow and condolence, and the death firmly ostracized. The cemeteries have a look of modern people's apartments in that they have the same size, the same structure, and the same contract. ● "Don't follow me" is the advice that the deceased advise the living never to follow them and the tacit gesture that the living are also destined to follow the dead. At the same time, it is my murmured spell and pray while I am walking around public cemetery. ■ 이선애
