Walking in the Clouds

포틀랜드 커뮤니티 컬리지(Portland Community College)와 North View 갤러리는 미국 북서부의 오리건(Oregon) 지역에서 한국작가 박소영의 작품을 소개할 수 있게 된 것에 대해 기쁘게 생각한다. 서울에 거주하고 있는 박소영 작가는 태평양 연안 북서부에 임시 체류하게 되면서, 이 지역에서 새롭게 만나게 된 변화무쌍한 날씨에 주목하게 되었고 이를 표현한 전시를 준비하게 되었다. 한국에서보다 낮게 떠 있으면서 끊임없이 움직이는 구름으로 덮인 하늘을 보거나, 구름 낀 날이 많아서 더 소중한 가끔씩 맑게 개는 하늘을 바라보면서 작가는 또 다른 하늘 아래 놓인 자신을 인식하게 되었다. 이번 전시는 미국에서 두 번째로 개최되는 작가의 개인전이다.

야외를 거닐면서 영감을 받은 작가는 자연과 우주에 대한 명상과 사색을 그렸다. 작가의 그림은 한국의 전통 민속예술과 산수화의 전통과 관련되어 있다. 작가의 작품들은 사군자의 도상적 상징을 내포하고 있는데, 사군자는 유교의 성리학적 전통에 뿌리를 두고 있으나 오늘날에 와서는 사계절을 상징하는 보편적인 개념으로 널리 알려져 있다. 작가는 직접 손으로 안료 가루를 곱게 빻아 아교에 갠 물감을 사용하여 흡수성이 뛰어난 한지 위에 작업한다. 박소영은 세포처럼 보이는 입자들로 구성된 대기(大氣)의 장(場)을 만들고, 구름처럼 보이는 붓질과 함께 어른거리는 반투명한 필름처럼 보이는 대나무 잎들과 매화의 이미지를 겹쳐 놓았다. 선명하게 보이지 않는 이 식물들은 사실 자연 속의 구체적인 실체를 가리키는 것이다. 작가는 그러한 이미지들을 하나로 묶거나 그것들이 상호 침투하는(서로 스며드는) 풍경을 만들어냈다. 포도 알 속에 매화나 대나무가 자리하고 있거나 대나무에 포도 알이 주렁주렁 매달려 있는 듯하다. 시각적으로 구름의 풍경은 추상적인 입자 형태로 나타났다. 동시에 더 넓은 관점에서 본다면 생물학적이고 지질학적인 구조를 암시한다고 볼 수 있다. 이전의 작가 작품에서 원은 생명을 담는 그릇으로서 원들은 유기적인 구조로 표현되어졌다. 그리고 이번 전시의 작품에서 원들은 공기의 움직임과 만질 수 없는 구름의 물방울들을 기본 요소로 하고 있다. ● 또한 이상의 작업 외에도 박소영은 아시아 문화와의 교감을 보여주기 위하여 한국의 전통 화첩에 오리건 지역의 풍경을 파노라마 형식으로 담아냈다. 이와 같은 형식은 작가가 전통적인 동양의 시점을 사용한 것으로, 이는 자연경관을 이동하면서 관찰하여 보는 동양 산수화의 거시적인 시점으로 구체적인 장소의 독특한 풍경의 정수를 담아내고자 한 것이다. ■ 마크 R. 스미스

Portland Community College and The North View Gallery are pleased to present the work of Korean artist, Soyoung PARK. A permanent resident of Seoul, PARK, who temporarily residing in the Pacific Northwest, has produced an exhibition focused on her encounters with this region's changeable weather; the low and constantly shifting cloud cover as well as the less frequent, but all the more precious sun-filled skies. This will be PARK's second solo exhibition in the US. ● Inspired by the artist's meandering outdoor walks, PARK's painted meditations on nature and the cosmos reference specific traditions of Korean folk art and landscape painting. The works include iconic symbols from the Four Gracious Plants, which originated in Confucian philosophy and are now commonly used to represent the seasons. Working with hand-ground inks and color pigments on absorbant Korean paper, PARK renders atmospheric fields of cellular, cloud-like strokes superimposed with bamboo leaves and plum blossoms in a shimmering transluscent film. Those ghostlike botanicals are PARK's only reference to real physical substance. The artist combines those images or creates landscapes where they interpenetrate. Plum blossoms or bamboo seem to be placed inside individual grapes, and grapes seem to hang in clusters from bamboo. The land and cloudscapes visually materialize in abstract molecular form, alluding to broader aspects of biological and geological structure. Earlier, in her paintings, the circle was the vessel which contained life and represented organization. Now, the circles are the basic elements of air movement and the water drops of untouchable clouds. ● In addition to these works, PARK will also present a more literal communion of Asian culture and place in a traditional Korean folding book that features a panoramic painting of the Oregon landscape. In this format, the artist uses traditional Asian perspective, which allows the recreation of observed landscapes with shifting, macroscopic viewpoints to capture the essence of a specific place. ■ Mark R.
