사소한 순간 Trifling Moment

KAIST 리서치 앤 아트는 올해 세 번째 전시로 안세은의 『사소한 순간』을 개최한다. 주변과 중심의 개념이 관점에서 비롯됨을 드러내는 안세은은 필리핀의 풍경을 소재로 한 신작들을 통해 그 주제를 확장시킨다. 작가는 신작들에서 지극히 일상적이고 사소한 순간과 그 속에 놓인 인물을 포착하여 자기중심적 시선에 의한 가치평가에 질문을 던진다. 이번 전시에서는 회화 및 설치를 포함해 총 20여 점의 작품이 소개된다.

안세은은 작업 초창기부터 장식용 종이 받침, 10원 짜리 동전, 생수병 뚜껑, 신문지와 같은 한 번 쓰고 버려지는 일회용품, 일상적 사물에 주목해왔다. 그것들을 직접 활용하여 설치작업을 하거나, 이미지를 전체 또는 부분으로 확대하여 그려냄으로써 낯선 사물로 탈바꿈 시켰다. 오랜 노동의 시간을 들여 탄생한 작품의 이미지들은 사용 후 쉽게 버려지는 사물들의 실용적 가치와는 대비되어, 영속하는 고유의 가치를 발산하는 것처럼 보인다. 그럼으로써 작품을 감상하는 이들에게 모든 존재의 가치는 어디에서 비롯되는 것인지를 숙고하게 만든다.

이 주제의 연장선 상에 있는 신작들에서 안세은은 주변과 중심의 관계에 대해 더 깊이 탐구한다. 작가는 필리핀의 거리, 시장, 수영장 그리고 야자수 등 쉽게 마주칠 수 있는 일상적 사물과 풍경을 담아낸다. 작가에게 최근 차례로 스위스와 필리핀에서 거주한 경험은 시선에 담겨진 풍경 그리고 우리가 살고 있는 세계가 고정되어 있는 차등적 가치를 지닌 것이 아니라 누군가의 관점 속에서 계속 유동적으로 변화하고 있다는 사실을 강하게 전달해준다. 안세은이 이해하는 존재의 모든 가치는 일렬로 순서 매김 될 수 없고, 매 순간 경험하는 주관과의 관계 속에서 일시적으로 재설정될 뿐이다. 그렇기에, 하찮아 보이는 어떤 사물도 그 나름의 가치와 의미를 내포하고 있다고 볼 수 있다. 이런 관점에서 작가가 시도하는 것은 매우 일상적인 순간들을 그와 대비되는 영원의 순간으로 붙들어 놓으려는 것이다. 한 번 본 후 기억 속에서 사라지는 사소한 풍경이 아니라 우리의 다른 기억들을 환기시키는 소중한 풍경으로 전환시키는 것이다. 작가는 주변이 중심으로 유연하게 자리바꿈하는 순간을 우리에게 선사한다. ● 안세은은 이러한 시도를 위해 오랜 시간의 노동이 요구되는 작업 과정을 기꺼이 선택한다. 그리고 그런 손의 노동을 거쳐 탄생한 작업들은 낯설거나 신비롭게 느껴지며 때론 소유의 욕구를 자극한다. 이전 작업에서부터 선보였던 검은색으로 표현된 대상과 배경을 뒤덮는 진주빛 색감의 무수한 점들의 대비는 그러한 효과를 증폭시킨다. 이와 같이 작업 전반에서 드러나는 주변과 중심의 문제는 앞으로도 안세은 작품의 지속적인 주제가 될 것이며 그 결과, 일상에서 만나는 매 순간의 '사소하지 않음'을 우리에게 일깨워 줄 것이다. ■ 정소라

KAIST Research & Art is holding the third exhibition of this year, Se-Eun An's 『Trifling Moments』. Through her new works that depict landscapes of Philippines, Se-Eun An attempts to deliver that the concepts of "center" and "margin" eventually come from different points of view. Capturing the most routine and trivial moments and the characters in those very moments, the artist questions the valuation by self-centered perspectives. The exhibition introduces 20 new work pieces including paintings and installations. ● From the early period of her work life, An has been focusing on everyday objects and disposable products such as ornamented paper coasters, 1 cent coins, bottle caps, and newspapers. By utilizing them directly into the installation, or enlarging images, she transformed those materials into 'not-familiar' things. In contrast to practical value of those objects that can easily be discarded after use, the images of her work pieces that took a long time to work on seem to give off persistent intrinsic value. The works make audiences ponder from where the value of all the existents comes from. ● Through her new works, the artist explores more deeply into the relation between center and margin. In her works, Se-Eun portrayed everyday objects and landscapes of Philippines that can be easily seen in routine life such as streets, markets, swimming pools and coconut trees. Her recent living experience in Switzerland and Philippines strongly delivers the fact that landscape and the world we are living in do not have constant value but keep changing dynamically by someone else's point of view. An sees that all present values cannot be lined in order. It is only to be temporarily reset in relations with subjective experiences in every moment. It implies that every single thing that looks trivial has its own value and meaning. What the artist attempts to express in this respect is to hold on to very ordinary moments to last as eternal moments. In other words, it is not just to let the landscape disappear after having been seen once but to switch the landscape to a precious scene that reminds us of many good memories. Through her works, the artist presents her audience with that special moment when "margin" smoothly changes their position to "center". ● Se-Eun An willingly chooses the process of work that requires much effort as well as a long time. The works created through such effort give rather unfamiliar or mysterious impression, and sometimes they even stimulate the desire of possessiveness. Contrast between the black object and the countless pearly-colored dots covering the background amplifies the effect. As we can see in her overall works, An will continue to focus on the theme of "center" and "margin" in her future works. Through her works, she will keep on attempting to remind us of that every single moment in our daily lives never can be "trivial". ■ Jung Sola
