롯데갤러리 안양점에서는 다양한 동물들의 입체 콜라주가 모인 'Flat-animal museum : 납작한 동물원 展"을 개최합니다. 말 그대로 납작하게 오려져 배치된 가지각색의 동물들은 동식물 표본 박물관을 연상하게 합니다. 그 올망졸망함에 가까이 다가가 보면, 유쾌하게 의인화되어 그들만의 작은 세상에서 여가 생활을 즐기고 있는 모습들을 발견할 수 있습니다.

챙 넓은 모자와 커다란 선글라스로 한껏 멋을 부린 코끼리의 행렬, 보석 사이를 유영하는 상어들, 롤러스케이트를 타는 닭과 보드를 타는 독수리, 미러 볼 아래에서 유유자적하는 새 떼, 디저트를 즐기는 사자 무리... 아름다운 것, 즐거운 것, 맛있는 것을 상징하는 이미지들과 혼합되어 지극히 여유로운 분위기를 자아내는 동물들의 모습은 현대 유토피아의 일면 그 자체로, 복잡하고 머리 아픈 스트레스로부터 벗어나 거부할 수 없는 권태의 즐거움에 빠진 현대인의 모습과 많이 닮아 있습니다. 납작하게 오려진 동물들에게 조흰곰 작가는 술과 달콤한 케이크를 권하는 존재로, 그저 지속되는 즐거움의 순간 속에 그들을 영원히 납작한 모습으로 박제하고, 보는 이에게 인간 문화의 표상과 동물 형상이 결합된 '납작한 동물원' 이라는 보편적인 농담을 건넵니다.

세대, 문화, 사회적 배경 등 크고 작은 경계들을 현대의 우리는 매일같이 일상에서 마주하고 있습니다. 조흰곰 작가는 '웃음'을 그 경계를 허물 수 있는 하나의 소통으로 제안합니다. 웃음을 짓는 작은 반응만으로도 우리는 경계들 사이에서 일종의 대화를 만들어낼 수 있습니다. 조흰곰 작가가 안내하는 안락한 동물원 속 입체 콜라주 작품들은 언어, 문화, 사회적 배경이 없이도 누구나 함께 웃을 수 있는 보편적이고 '순수한' 유쾌함으로 다가옵니다. 조흰곰 작가가 농담처럼 풀어놓은, 디저트와 칵테일을 든 작은 동물들을 보며 웃음을 머금고 우리 주변의 경계를 허물어가는 유쾌한 소통의 시간을 가지실 수 있기를 바랍니다. ■ 롯데갤러리

납작한 공간: 깊이를 빼앗긴 세계 ● 창 넓은 모자와 커다란 선글라스로 한껏 멋을 부린 코끼리의 행렬, 보석 사이를 유영하는 상어들, 롤러스케이트를 타는 닭과 보드를 타는 독수리, 미러 볼 아래에서 유유자적하는 새 떼, 디저트를 즐기는 사자 무리... 이 환영의 이미지는 모두 조흰곰 작가의 개인전 『납작한 동물원』 의 구성원이다. 인간만이 향유하는 유흥과 여가, 혹은 허영에 빠진 듯 한 이 동물들의 여유로운 한때를 들여다 보고 있다 보면 당신의 동물원 투어는 금방 종료된다. 조흰곰 작가는 근 몇 년간 지속적으로 콜라주 작업을 선보이며 자신의 작업 세계를 구축하고 있다. 이번 개인전의 작품들은 큰 맥락안에서 이전의 화법을 고수하고 있으며 작가는 흰 색의 가상 공간 위에 인간 문화의 표상表象과 동물 형상의 결합을 통해 여전히 '보편적인 농담'을 건네고 있다.

그러나 작가가 추구하는 유머 속을 유심히 들여다보면 온전한 천진난만과 유쾌라 하기엔 어쩐지 석연치 않은 부분이 있다. 보통 의인화 된 동물들이 예술 작품 속에서 인간의 행위를 풍자하기 위한 대상, 혹은 작가의 의도가 투영된 모습으로 인용되곤 했다면 조흰곰의 동물들은 이와 다른 양상을 보이고 있기 때문이다. 이들은 탐욕스럽거나 잔인하지도 비판적이거나 전위적이지도 않다. 오히려 작품 속 동물들은 그들의 의지를 잃어버린 듯 하며 극도로 순진하고 수동적으로 느껴진다. 동시에 이들은 아름다운 것, 즐거운 것, 맛있는 것을 상징하는 이미지들과 혼합되어 지극히 여유로운 분위기를 자아낸다. 즉 가장 즐거운 한때의 모습으로 박제된 것이다. 이러한 영원한 안녕安寧은 궁극적으로 공허를 향해 있고 보드리야르 Jean Baudrillard 가 이야기한 탈현대 Postmodern 시대, 허공을 헤매는 무의미의 시대 속 삶의 패턴을 드러낸다. 의인화 된 동물들에게 부여한 쾌락의 순간들은 작가가 재현하려 한 허무의 풍광이며 동시에 거부할 수 없는 권태의 즐거움에 빠진 현대인이 다다른 쓸쓸한 유토피아이다. 이를 반영 하듯 이번 전시에서 조흰곰 작가는 실제 표본 상자를 액자 대신에 사용하기도 하는데 이는 작가가 박제 행위의 주체主體임을 은연중에 각인 시킨다. 결과적으로 이것은 작가 스스로가 순진무구한 개체들에게 옷을 입히고 술을 권하며 달콤한 케이크를 내미는 존재로 인지 될 가능성을 열어두는 것 이기에 흥미롭다.

그가 창조한 동물원 속 박제된 동물들은 숨쉬지 않기에 질식 하지도 않으며 그저 지속되는 유희속에서 영원히 그 모습으로 남게 될 것이다. 그리하여 조흰곰 작가가 안내하는 안락한 동물원은 풍요에 대한 은밀한 환멸이 드리운 '납작한' 공간, 깊이를 빼앗긴 세계이다. ■ 정수

A Flat Space: The World Shorn of its Depth ● Elephants dressed up in colourful hats and big sunglasses, sharks swimming between glittering jewels, a chicken and a hawk enjoying rollerskating and skateboarding, a flock of birds flying under a mirror ball, and a group of lions having sweet dessert... These illusionary images are members of Hingom Cho's solo exhibition 『Flat-Animal Museum』. ● The museum tour would terminate, while you encounter idle moments of the animal whose activities are similar to human's containing a pleasure of leisure, entertainment and vanity. Hingom Cho has been constructing her own artistic characteristic by constantly producing collage artworks for recent few years. This solo show maintains the artist's previous style in a broad context; Cho still makes 'Universal Jokes' by juxtaposing animal figures and visual fragments representing human culture on white virtual surfaces. ● However, when you look into details of this humour, there are some awkward elements questioning its intact innocence and delight. Personified animals in art pieces usually refer to subjects satirizing human's brutal and unjust behaviours or features metaphorically reflecting artist's intentions, whereas Cho's animals reveal different aspects. They are not greedy, violent and cruel or critical, skeptical and avant-garde. They seem extremely naïve and passive as though they had already lost their will and motivation. Consequently, when they are combined with symbolic images standing for beautiful, joyful and delicious products, a considerably peaceful atmosphere is generated. In other words, they are stuffed in the most pleasant instant. This eternal stability ultimately heads towards emptiness and it unveils life patterns of Postmodernism which Baudrillard mentioned as an era of meaninglessness, wandering in a void. The sybaritic moments bestowed upon the anthropomorphised animals construct futile scenery which the artist attempted to represent and it is a bleak utopia where our contemporaries indulged in an irresistible pleasure of boredom arrive at. Reflecting this hidden intention, Hingom Cho used specimen cabinets instead of picture frames for few artworks in this solo show and this implies that the artist herself is the main agent of the act, taxidermy. It is intriguing that she opens up the possibility of emphasising on the artist's presence who dresses fancy clothes on the paper animals, offers them alcohol, and gives them sweet cakes. ● The animals locked up in Cho's museum would never be suffocated since they do not breathe in the first place, and they will permanently stay in the same condition. Accordingly, this oddly cozy animal museum introduced by Hingom Cho is a 'Flat' space, the world shorn of its depth, where a clandestine contempt is cast over. ■ Su Jung
