아뜰리에 에르메스는 2016년 8월 26일부터 10월 23일까지 제16회 에르메스 재단 미술상 수상자인 정금형의 작업 여정을 또 다른 방식으로 맥락화한 전시 『개인소장품』을 개최한다.

정금형은 2009년 『7가지 방법』을 선보이며 미술계에 등장했다. 『7가지 방법』에서 작가는 남성 인형 머리를 진공청소기에 붙이고 일종의 인형극을 선보였다. 최근에 초연된 『재활훈련』(2015)에서는 160분이 넘는 시간 동안 스스로 몸을 가누지 못하는 사람, 좀더 정확하게 말하자면, 더미(의료용 인체 모형)를 상대로 재활훈련을 실시했다. 작가에 의해 제어되고 조정되는 더미는 재활훈련을 받고 마침내 몸을 일으켜 세우고 몇몇 몸 움직임과 손 동작을 성공적으로 완수해낸다. 재활훈련을 내세운 이 상황은, 야릇하게도, 남성과 여성 사이에서 벌어지는 성적인 행위들을 연상시켰는데, 흥미로운 것은, 이 모든 과정이 자의(自意)를 표출할 수 없는 남성 더미를 엄격하게 제어하고 조종하는 작가 정금형의 의지가 이루어낸 상황이기에, 수고스러운 오랜 노력의 과정들이 결국 여성의 자위(自慰)로 귀결될 수밖에 없다는 점이다. 이것은 그의 전작(前作)들에서 드러났던 상황들과 크게 다르지 않다. 『7가지 방법』과 『재활훈련』, 그리고 잘 알려진 『심폐소생술연습』(2013)이나 『휘트니스 가이드』(2011)에서 보여졌듯이, 정금형은 인간의 몸과 그 주변의 사물들 사이의 관계를 탐구하고, 자신의 몸과의 강렬하고 대담한 교류를 통해 평범하고 일상적인 사물들에 기묘하고 불안한 생명력을 부여한다. 진공청소기, 운동 기구, 재활 기구, 굴삭기, 더미 등과 같이 움직이지 않는 사물들로 구성되는 정금형의 공연은 이렇게 움직일 수 없는 사물들을 움직이는 것처럼 혹은 살아있는 것처럼 보이게 만들고자 하는 욕망으로부터 비롯되고, 정금형의 행위는 이 사물들을 제어하고 조종하는 작가-조종자 역할과 그 사물들에 감정 이입을 하는 작가-배우 역할을 끊임 없이 오간다. 이것은 다시 정금형과 사물들 사이에서 벌어지는 은밀하고 야릇한 장면을 바라보는 관람객들의 시선과 뒤엉키며 불편한 유희의 상황을 이끌어낸다.

이번 전시 『개인소장품』은 이러한 불편한 유희를 이끌어온 정금형이 자신의 욕망을 투사하고 교감했던 다양한 인체 모형과 도구들을 '수집과 소장(所藏)'이라는 맥락으로 치환하여 펼쳐보임으로써, 수동적인 타자의 시선으로 정금형의 욕망을 바라보던 관객들에게 또 다른 방식의 경험을 제공하게 된다. 공연을 통해 익숙해진 인체 모형과 도구들뿐 아니라, 실현된 공연의 이면에서 드러나지 않던 사물과 기구들, 혹은 시행착오를 거쳐 쓰임이 달라진 다양한 수집품들이 '전시'의 형식으로 펼쳐진 장(場)에서 정금형의 독특하고 기괴한 '개인소장품'은 관람객 각자의 상상력을 자극하여 다양한 개인들의 욕망이 은밀히, 그러나 적극적으로 발현되는 발칙한 순간들을 개별적으로 제공할 것이다. ■ 아뜰리에 에르메스

Atelier Hermès in Seoul is delighted to announce an exhibition by Jeong Geumhyung, entitled 『Private Collection』. ● Jeong Geumhyung, the 16th laureate of Hermès Foundation Missulsang, is a choreographer and performance artist with the strongest energies. She studied theatre and acting, contemporary dance and performance, and animation film at the university and the grad school. She has moved onto the visual art while showing 『Seven Ways』 in 2009, where she combines a head of a male puppet with a vacuum cleaner and performs a kind of puppet show. In recently premired performance 『Rehab Training』 (2015), over 2 hours 30 minutes Jeong Geumhyung rehabilitates a disabled person, more accurately, practices a rehab training with a dummy and various rehab equipment. The dummy controlled by Jeong Geumhyung undergoes rehabilitation and he finally can lift himself up and successfully complete several body movements and hand motions, which reminds us of a sexual act between a man and a woman, or accurately a woman's masturbation. And this is not much different from her previous other performances. As shown in 『Seven Ways』 and 『Rehab Training』, she explores the relationship between the human body and the things surrounding it. Through intense, risky interactions with her own body, she bestows a bizarre and disconcerting life upon plain and everyday objects, with which she expresses such issues as the body, power and oppression. Jeong Geumhyung's performance is choreographed with immobile objects such as vacuum cleaners, exercise equipment, rehab equipment, excavators and dummies. Derived from a desire to make these immobile objects look like mobile or live beings, Jeong Geumhyung's gestures endlessly overturn the artist-operator role that controls the objects and the artist-actor role that empathizes with them. This, in turn, carries on the uncomfortable plays being intertwined with the gaze of the audience that looks at the secretive and tantalizing circumstance happening between Jeong Geumhyung and objects. ● As for 『Private Collection』, her solo exhibition to be held at Atelier Hermès, Jeong Geumhyung provides another way of experiencing her art for the audience that has taken a peek at Jeong Geumhyung's desire with a passive glance of the others. Here, Jeong Geumhyung drags her dummies and equipment that she controlled and empathized with into the context of collecting and collection, and unfolds them in the museum setting. The exhibition of Jeong Geumhyung's peculiar and weird collection will arouse audiences' curiosity and introduce them to an odd moment of secretively yet aggressively betraying the desire of various individuals. ■ Atelier Hermès
