Meaningful Insight

매일 마주하는 무수한 일상의 장면이 나의 시야에 포착된 순간, 그것은 의미있는(meaningful) 순간으로 바뀌어간다. ● 길가에 늘어서있는 가로수와 가로등, 보도 블록, 건물의 빼곡한 창문, 줄지어 서있는 자동차, 분주히 걸어가는 사람들, 도심의 규칙적인 빛의 움직임 등 반복적인 모습을 포착한다. 반복적인 행위나 사물 또는 그러한 이미지에 끌리는 집착과 현재의 즉각적인 감성(sense)의 혼합이 작업의 시작이 된다.

현실로부터 빠져나온 그 장면이 나의 회화로 동화될 때 그 형태는 모호해지기 시작한다. 모호한 형태는 내가 갖고 있는 즉흥성과 관련이 있으며, 당시의 심리적 감정 또는 자유로움을 추구하는 나의 의지이다. 또한 매일 경험하는 반복의 일상은 뚜렷한 목적없이 쉼없이 돌아가는 현실의 풍경에 닿아있다고 느낀다. 이런 현실을 살아가는, 살 수 밖에 없는, 살아지고 있는 나, 그리고 우리를 발견한다. 나는 이러한 상태를 이해하고 몰입하는 과정을 insight라 표현한다. 몰입한 대상을 화면으로 끌어들여 즉흥적인 붓질과 우연한 물성의 효과로 자유로움을 더했으며, 때론 자유로움을 추구하기 위해 붓이 아닌 핸드페인팅을 시도하기도 했다.

이번 전시를 준비하면서 우리의 삶에 있어서 의미있는 것이 무엇인지 들여다보게 되었다. 결국 나의 회화는 내면의 이야기로 일관될 수 있으나, 나 아닌 우리로 인식이 확장됐다는 점에서 긍정적으로 바라보고 있다. ■ 김승현

Whenever countless scenes of daily life are seized by my sight, they are turned into meaningful moments. ● Captured are patterns of images such as street trees along the road, streetlights, sidewalk blocks, windows stuffed into buildings, massed ranks of cars, people busily walking on the street, regular movements of city lights, etc. Repetitive actions & objects, my obsession with those repetitive images and my immediate sense on them are all mixed, which leads to the beginning of my painting. ● When scenes escaped from the reality are transformed into my painting, their shapes become vague. Those vague shapes originate from my spontaneity and they are reflection of my free will to pursue the meanings of the moment. Also, I feel that our repetitive daily life are linked with real scenes which seem to continue without any purpose. Then, I find 'myself' and 'us' who live this reality, have to live and survive. I want to put "insight" into this process of understanding and immersion. I brought those immersed objects to the canvas and added freedom by spontaneous brushing and by using the nature of materials. I sometimes tried hand painting instead of brush in order to pursue freedom. ● As I prepared for this exhibition, I had a chance to see what was meaningful in our lives. Though my paintings might be confined to the inner story, I am positively pointing out that my perception is expanded to us, not me. ■ SeungHyun Kim
