만남이 있어야 관계가 시작됩니다. 세상에는 정중하고 수줍고 불가해하고 난해하고 말수가 적고 피상적이고 정직하지 않은 사람들, 정직 하기는 해도 해독하기 어려운 사람들, 어떤 이유에서인지 속내를 드러내지 않는 사람들로 가득합니다. 대개는 스스로 무슨 생각을 하고 어떤 감정을 느끼는지 모르기 때문입니다. 그러나 누군가 공감하고 경청해준다는 확신이 들면 과감히 속내를 털어놓는 사람이 많습니다. 교육을 받으면서 속내를 드러내지 말아야 한다고 생각하게 된 사람도 많습니다. 타인의 머릿속에 감춰진 생각은 우리를 둘러싼 거대한 어둠입니다. ● 생각은 혼자 놔두면 외롭고 무력합니다. 생각은 소통을 통해 수정 되어야만 남들에게도 의미 있는 생각이 됩니다. 생각을 막무가내로 주입할 수는 없고, 모든 개인은 각자의 감성과 기억을 토대로 새로 흡수된 정보를 생각으로 형성합니다. 그리고 생각은 다른 사람의 생각을 접하기 전에는 그 나름의 가치를 모릅니다. 사람들의 머릿속에 감춰둔 이 숨겨진 생각을 끌어낼 방법은 만남에 있고, 만남이 있어야 관계가 시작됩니다. 이렇게 서로서로의 관계는 새로운 생각을 만들어 냅니다.

The Story of Sun Fish Meets the Black Sea ● Sunfish가 검은 바다를 만나는 이야기 입니다. 태양을 닮은 Sun fish는 태양에 살고 있는 물고기입니다. Sun fish는 바다를 보고 싶었습니다. 달에 사는 달토끼가 Sun fish에게 이런 말을 했기 때문입니다. "바다는 끝없이 펼쳐진 검은 우주공간과 같아. 바다엔 시원한 바람이 불고, 그 안에 울긋불긋 아름다운 생명체들이 살고 있어." 이글이글 타오르는 태양은 눈부시게 빛납니다. 그런 태양과 함께 Sun fish도 아름답게 빛납니다. 하지만 여기엔 바다가 없습니다. Sun fish는 상상하기 시작했습니다. '바다는 어떤 곳일까?' ● 달토끼는 지구에서 온 토끼입니다. 간을 노리는 거북이한테서 도망쳐 달로 왔다고 합니다. 그래서 바다에 대해 잘 압니다. 달토끼는 Sun fish에게 파란 바다가 얼마나 아름다운지 말해주곤 했습니다. 달토끼는 이런 말도 했습니다. "Sun fish야, 네 몸에 난 버섯이 널 죽음에 이르게 할 거야. 죽기 전에 네가 바다를 꼭 보길 바래." ● 어느 날 Sun fish는 바다를 보기 위해 먼 길을 떠났습니다. 결국에는 바다에 다다랐지요. 모두에게 푸른색으로 보이는 바다가 어쩐 일인지 Sun fish에게는 검은 색으로 보였습니다. Sun fish는 시원하게 부는 바람, 검은 모래사장, 검게 출렁이는 물결, 계속 밀려와 부서지는 파도에 매혹되었습니다. 그렇게 Sun fish는 검은 바다를 만났습니다.

1. Black Sea ● 비와 태풍이 일어나는 스리랑카와 샌프란시스코의 역동적인 바다를 흑백사진으로 담았습니다. 작가는 비바람으로 아무도 거닐지 않은 바다에 서있었습니다. 외롭고 축축한 바다를 고요하고 잔잔하게 담아낸 검은 바다 사진은 홀로 세상 끝에 서있는 느낌을 줍니다. 그럼에도 너무나 아름다운 물결의 바다는 사진 찍는 이를 매혹하여 여러 장의 사진으로 자신을 남겼습니다. 이 사진을 바라보는 또 다른 이는 검은 바다에서 핑크색 Sun Fish을 발견하였습니다.

2. Sun Fish ● 핑크색 Sun Fish가 검은 바다에서 출현하였습니다. 몸 구석구석에 피어나는 버섯은 독을 품고 있지만 아름답고 유용해 보입니다. 이 독버섯들은 사랑에 빠지듯 강한 필요를 일으키며 빠르게 번식하였습니다. 그러나 쉽게 사라지기도 하는 버섯은 신기루 같이 느껴지기도 합니다. 세상에 존재할지 모를, 동화책 속의 이야기에나 등장하는 핑크 Sun Fish는 눈부시게 스스로 빛나던 태양을 떠나 검은 바다와 만났습니다.

3. 실체와 대체물 ● 종종 실체가 대체물로 보이고 대체물이 실체로 보이는 혼란스런 지점을 바라보게 됩니다. 검은 바다의 실체는 변화하는 삶의 현장인데 잔잔한 바다 사진으로 대체되고, 누구도 그 역동적인 현장을 맞보지 못합니다. 그것은 오직 사진 찍는 이의 것이 됩니다. 대체물이 되는 예술작품은 작가의 마음이 담겨있다고 정의 할 수 있을 것입니다. 액자에 담긴 검은 바다 사진을 전시장에서 보게 된다면 실체에 마음을 담아온 작가의 이야기를 들을 수 있을지 모릅니다.

Every relationship starts when there is a meeting. The world is full of polite, shy, incomprehensible, difficult, quiet, superficial or dishonest people or sometime with people who are honest but hard to understand or people who show no intention or what they are thinking for whatever reasons they might have. This is mostly because people do not know themselves what they are thinking or feeling in many cases. But when people feel secure and is sure that there is someone else who is listening carefully and feel sympathetic toward the feeling they have, people are surprisingly willing to share their most inner secret personal life stories with that other person. There are also many people who were educated not to show any personal thoughts or opinions because they can play as disadvantages toward them. What lies deep and veiled in other peoples' mind are the vast darkness that surrounds most of us. ● Thoughts are powerless and lonely when they are left alone. Thoughts become valuable and meaningful to others as well, only when they are communicated and are modified after they are shared through these sincere communications. At the same time, it is impossible to forcefully inject one's thoughts and ideas to others unilaterally. Every individual filters the given information through their own personal experiences and translation based upon their memory and sensibility and reform the newly absorbed influence from others into something more personal and meaningful in their mind. These influences cannot be estimated in their values unless people meet other people and encounter their thoughts and opinions in sincere manner. The only way to bring out these hidden thoughts from other people lies in meeting and encountering. Meeting is the starting point for any beginning of new relationship, and building relationships enables new, unexpected ideas and thoughts to be created. The Story of Sun Fish Meeting the Black Sea ● Sun fish, the fish who looks exactly like the Sun, lives on the Sun. Sun fish wanted to see the sea, because Moon rabbit, who lives on the Moon, told Sun fish. "The sea is like an endlessly spread universe of black space. Cool breezes blow on the surface and inside, there are many beautiful life forms in all different colors and shapes." The Sun, burning blazingly and glaringly, always shines brilliantly. Just like the Sun, Sun fish also glows ever so beautifully. But on the Sun, the sea is nowhere to be found. Sun fish started to imagine. 'What would the sea look like?' ● Moon rabbit came from Earth. It is said that Moon rabbit ran away from Sea turtle who was trying to steal rabbit's liver. That is why Moon rabbit knows so much about the sea. Moon rabbit used to tell Sun fish how beautiful the sea looks, reflecting the purest blue one can imagine. Moon rabbit also told Sun fish, "My dear Sun fish, the mushrooms springing in your body will eventually lead to your death. I really hope you to see the sea before you die." ● One day, Sun fish took a long journey to see the sea. And finally, Sun fish arrived at the sea. The sea, with its beautiful bright blue light and color, for some unknown reason, appeared to be black to Sun fish. Nonetheless, Sun fish fell in love with the cool breeze blowing above the water, the soft, black sandy beach, the black waves gently rolling on the surface and the continuously crashing black waves. That is how Sun fish finally met the Black Sea. 1. Black Sea ● The photographer aimed to capture the dynamic seas of Sri Lanka and San Francisco in black and white photography as rain and typhoons were hitting the areas. The artist stood at the edge of the ocean all alone, emptied and deserted due to the rainstorm. The photography of the black sea, calmly and quietly capturing the lonely and damp sea, delivers a sense of solitude as if one is standing at the end of the world, all by oneself. Nevertheless, the sea with its ever so beautiful current and waves fascinated and attracted the photographer that the photographer ended up capturing quite a few of these serene and tranquil landscape, On the other hand, the other artist who was looking at the same photography, discovered a pink colored Sun fish from this black sea image and developed a unique moment of the encounter between two very different natures. 2. Sun Fish ● Sun fish, with its burning pink florescent color, emerged to this black sea. The mushrooms, covering every part of its body, contains lethal poison but still they appear to be beautiful and useful. These poisonous mushrooms managed to multiply quickly as if they felt the urge of necessity to do so, almost like they were falling in love controllably with something unknown. However, these mushrooms also look as if they were merely a mirage, so easily dissoluble and never to be found again. The bright pink Sun fish from the story of the fairy tale, could actually exist in this world somewhere, somehow. Sun fish willingly and voluntarily left the dazzlingly beautiful burning Sun to travel a long way to meet the Black Sea. 3. Substance and Substitute ● People sometimes experience and witness the confusing point where the real substance appears to look like a substitute and the substitute actually looks like the real entity. The real substance of the black sea is the real-life scene of ever changing nature but this is substituted into a frozen photography of a calm ocean and the viewers who look at the photography can never experience that dynamic energy of the real site. The photographer alone can solely own the moment. However, the art piece that the artists provide in substitute form of the real world, can be defined to carry the real substance of the artists' intention and mind. If you see the framed image of the black sea at the exhibition, you could perhaps listen to the story the artist is telling you, through the substituted object as a vessel that contains the real entity of the substance. The imagination of a non-existing entities is greatly fascinating and it stirs up another level of imagination from the viewers who are watching this imagination. Because the real substance does not exist in the first place, the only possibility to capture and deliver this imagination lies in the substitute, and the choices become unlimited and totally free. These works are created with the hope that this unlimited possibility and freedom continues to be expressed valiantly throughout under the name of art and to be shared by others. ■ Song & Kyong
