도시에 밤이 오면 낮과는 다른 풍경이 펼쳐진다. 분주히 움직이던 자동차의 행렬, 생계를 잇기 위해 바쁘게 오가던 사람도 사라지고 간간이 보이던 취객의 흔들리는 걸음마저 어둠에 묻히면, 한낮에 위용을 자랑하는 신축빌딩 사이에서 남루하게 서있던 오래된 건물 이 당당한 자태로 나에게 다가와 이야기를 들려준다. 도시가 어떻 게 생기고 바뀌어 왔는지를. 유난히 추웠던 지난 겨울, 나는 바람에 흩어진 이야기들을 주우려, 거리를 이리저리 목적지 없이 걸었다.

작품 제목 밑의 사족(蛇足)은 방향 없는 나의 걸음만큼이나 흐트러 진 생각의 파편이다. ● 작품 제목 「서울, 심야산보(深夜散步)」를 "Midnight Balade in Seoul"로 영역해보았다. 'Balade'는 프랑스어로 '산책(散策)', '산보(散步)'1)의 뜻이다. ■ 김동욱

When the night comes to the city, the landscape is different from the daytime. When the busy procession of cars and those who have been busy making a living disappear, and the occasional drunken man's faltering steps are became buried in the darkness, the old buildings which were standing depressedly among the new buildings in the middle of the day come and tell me stories with dignity how the city has developed and changed. During last winter that was unusually freezing, I walked about the streets aimlessly, trying to gather up stories scattered by the wind. ● The redunandat comment under the title of the work is just as distracting a fragment of my thoughts as I walk without direction. ● I translate title of my works in English as "Midnight Balade in Seoul". * footnote 2) The korean word 'sanbo(散歩 さんぽ, stroll)' was originally a medical term made in the Japanese Nara era. The medicine is called Oseoksan(五石散, the five mineral medicines powder), which prescribes five mineral minerals such as stalactite, sulfur, white quartz, red quartz, and red bole. This medicine is used to improve the fragility. However, this medicine is effective immediately, so it will warm the body up, but if it doesn't warm the body up, it will harm the poison of the drug.
