~Kreuzen(크루젠)

대구미술관에서는 대구 출신으로 회화, 영상, 설치 등 장르를 넘나들며 국내외에서 활발하게 활동하고 있는 박종규(b.1966) 작가의 전시를 개최한다. 작가는 2009년부터 디지털 이미지의 기본단위인 픽셀에서 추출한 점과 선으로 '노이즈'를 구현하여 「Layers and Dimension」 등 평면과 입체를 넘나드는 다양한 층위의 관점과 차원에 대한 이야기를 전개해왔다. 2015년부터는 자신의 모든 작품에 통일된 시리즈의 제목을 부여하고 있으며 2015년 「Encoding(암호화하다)」, 2016년 「Maze of onlookers(미궁)」, 2017-2018년 「Embodiment(구현)」라는 하나로 연결되는 맥락의 시리즈를 진행해오고 있다. 2019년 대구미술관에서 열리는 이번 전시 제목 「~Kreuzen(크루젠)」은, '순항하다'라는 뜻의 독일어이다. 이전 시리즈가 모색과 실현의 시기였다면 2019년 시리즈 「~Kreuzen」은 작가의 예술세계의 순항을 기원하며 강렬한 시각적 경험을 선사한다.

'노이즈'는 보통 '소음, 잡음'을 뜻하며 현대음악에서는 '배제된 것' 또는 '제외된 것'을 의미한다. 또한 전위적인 전자 음악가들에게 노이즈는 규칙을 벗어나 실험적 작품을 하는 하나의 시발점이 되기도 했다. 박종규의 작업에서 '노이즈' 역시 배제된 것을 의미하는데, 모더니즘 미술에서 소외된 '시각적 노이즈'를 화면에 주요한 구성요소로 등장시킨다. 배제되고 소외된 것이 화면에 주요하게 드러나면서 박종규의 작품은 옳고 그름, 흑과 백 등 이항 대립적 틀을 해체하며 인식과 판단의 오류를 범하게 되는 체계를 시각적으로 드러낸다. 사회 속에서 우리가 무의식적으로 믿어왔던 것은 진짜로 믿을만한 것일까? 그렇다면 그 기준은 무엇일까? 작가는 감각적인 디지털 이미지로 관람객에게 의미심장한 질문을 던진다. 전작 모두 2019년 신작으로 구성된 이번 전시는 시각적으로 구현된 다양한 노이즈의 차원을 느낄 수 있다. 공간과 감각의 무한한 층위를 넘나드는 박종규 작가의 이번 전시는 우리를 감각적 혼란으로 이끌며 이를 통해 삶을 성찰하게끔 한다. ■ 대구미술관

The Daegu Art Museum is holding an exhibition of the artist J. Park (Jongkyu Park, b. 1966), a Daegu native actively working in Korea and abroad in the different genres of painting, video and installation. By embodying noise using dots and lines extracted from pixels, which form the basic unit of digital images, Park has been developing stories about perspectives and dimensions of various levels swinging between two and three dimensions, like in Layers and Dimension, since 2009. Since 2015, he has been assigning a uniform series name to all of his work, and he has been creating series of a coherent story, consisting of 2015's Encoding, 2016's Maze of Onlookers, and Embodiment of 2017-2018. The title of Park's 2019 exhibition at the Daegu Art Museum is "~Kreuzen," which means "to cruise" in German. If the artist's previous series was of a period of searching and realization, his 2019 series ~Kreuzen provides an intense visual experience while wishing for the artist's artistic perspective to cruise. ● "Noise" usually means "loud, unpleasant, disturbance-causing sound," and signifies "the excluded" or "ruled out" in contemporary music. Also, noise became a starting point for avant-garde electronic musicians to leave rules behind and create experimental work. Noise means the excluded in Park's art, too, and the artist presents visual noise excluded from Modernist art in his pictures as major components. As the excluded are revealed in his pictures as essential parts, Park's work deconstructs dichotomous frames like right versus wrong, and black versus white, to visually reveal the system in which one is led to make errors of perception and judgement. Are the things we have subconsciously believed in society truly believable? If so, what are their criteria? The artist asks viewers very meaningful questions through sensuous digital images. This exhibition, consisting entirely of new works created in 2019, allows viewers to feel various dimensions of visually embodied noise. The artist J. Park's current exhibition, which moves between infinite layers of space and sensibilities, leads us to sensorial confusion while encouraging us to reflect on our lives through it. ■ DAEGU ART MUSEUM
