우리는 광장에서 시작되었다. ● 인천아트플랫폼이 개관 10주년을 맞았다. 개관 10주년을 맞아 오는 9월 25일부터 10월 27일까지 인천아트플랫폼 전역에서 개관 10주년 기념사업 '오버드라이브(Overdrive) 2009-2019'를 개최한다. 10주년 행사를 아우르는 제목 '오버드라이브'는 자동차에 설치된 시동장치를 증속(增速) 시키는 장치를 일컫는 말로 증속하는 행위에 담긴 급진적인 정신을 예술에 접목하여 인천아트플랫폼의 새로운 변화 에너지와 역동적 비전을 제시하고자 한다. 동시에 창작공간으로서의 진화와 팽창, 확산의 가능성을 가리키며 인천 내에 존재하는 차이와 그것에 기반한 문화의 다양성을 함의한다. 10주년 기념사업 '오버드라이브 2009-2019'는 전시와 개막행사, 국제심포지엄, 시민참여 프로그램 등으로 구성된다. 기념전시인 『오버드라이브 2009~2019 : 여행하는 주체들, 창조자, 장소의 경험』은 창작공간으로서의 변화과정과 미학적 사건을 살피고 예술의 역동성과 가능성을 실험하고자 한다. 또한 300여 명의 여행하는 예술가들이 머무르며 그로 인해 벌어지는 변화의 과정을, 예술 활동의 생성과 소멸의 순환을, 빠르게 변화하는 동시대 예술의 반복과 쇄신의 과정을 살핀다. ● 이번 10주년 기념사업은 제목이 시사하듯, 인천아트플랫폼의 새로운 변화 에너지, 역동성과 함께 지역에 존재하는 문화적 다양성을 살핀다는 취지를 가지며, 이는 다섯 섹션의 전시로 가시화된다. 총 다섯 개의 작은 전시실은 서로 연결되면서도 동시에 독자적인 공간으로 다루어지고, 각 공간은 취지에 따라 공간의 연결과 구분을 명확히 한다. 이번 전시는 유동적이고 즉각적이며 동시대적이면서 주제에 초점을 맞추는 대신 다양한 창조적 스펙트럼을 제공한다. 전시는 인천아트플랫폼 B동 전시장으로부터 시작된다.

섹션 1. '광장에서'는 국내 자문위원들에게 인천아트플랫폼 입주작가 중 역동적 변화의 메시지를 시각예술로 풀어낼 수 있는 동시대 시각 예술작가를 추천을 받는 형식을 취하였다. 작품은 새로운 미학적 가치에 주목하여 변화와 개혁을 향한 움직임과 체제와 구조, 정치적 개입, 창조적 행위 등과 같이 역동성을 표현한 작품들이 주를 이룬다. 미적 역설로 재현된 시각적 환영에 의문을 던지는 최선을 비롯하여 현 자본주의 사회구조 기저에 자리한 개인과 집단의 욕망, 간극과 결핍을 다룬 김기라, 심승욱, 황문정, 그리고 시대적 상황을 둘러싼 욕망과 신체적 폭력을 그린 고등어의 드로잉 등이 전시된다. 또한 은폐된 개인의 의도와 욕망을 드러내 사회와 역사, 시간의 표상을 드러내는 이창훈과 세대 간 복잡하게 그려진 여러 경계를 개인의 기억과 서사로 풀어나가는 조해준의 작품이 전시된다. 인식과 문화의 차이 안에 존재하는 지표들을 재해석한 사샤 폴, 그 차이와 다름, 사이의 간극을 드러내는 김시하의 작품도 마주할 수 있다. 전소정, 클레가는 사회문제인 인권, 난민, 격차, 경계, 국가 권력 등에 관한 메시지를 시각화하며 오재우, 윤주희, 임영주, 정혜정 등은 충돌과 조화를 다루는 미학적 사건과 과정들을 통해 그에 뒤따르는 새로움에 대한 의지와 변화에의 희망적 메지지를 전한다.

섹션 2. '제안하기'는 '광장에서'의 연장선상에서 인천아트플랫폼의 장소성을 드러내기 위한 프로젝트들로 다양한 매체의 확장을 통해 문화적 다양성을 살핀다. 야외 거대 현수막으로 설치된 클레가의 「모든 국가(Everystate)」는 B동 전시장에 내부에 전시된 「예외적 국가(States of exception)」를 패턴화해 설치한 작품으로 자본주의 권력 구조 아래 국가의 경계와 위치가 재편되는 상황을 표현한다. 또한 야외 설치된 홍지윤의 「침니 침 침 체-리(Chimney Chim Chim Cher-ee)」는 엘리베이터 구조와 전시 주제를 연결해 플랫폼에 동력을 불어넣은 굴뚝으로 상정해 이곳에 꽃과 새, 화려한 색채와 이미지로 그 의미를 교차시키며 주제와 공명한다. 이를 병행하여 전시를 인천시민, 일반 대중을 연결시키는 방안으로 웁쓰양의 참여형 퍼포먼스인 '2019 인천 멍때리기 대회'를 진행하고, 윈도우갤러리에서는 지난 8월 진행한 시민참여 이벤트인 '플레이 플랫폼 퍼즐(Play Platform Puzzle)' 사진 모음을 함께 전시한다. 작은 조각들이 모여 기대하던 하나의 형상이 완성되는 퍼즐처럼, 2009년 인천아트플랫폼이 개관하여 2019년 현재의 모습으로 발전하기까지 함께했던 수많은 시민의 모습과 이야기를 담은 전시를 통해 10년의 시간을 완성하는 프로젝트이다.

섹션 3. '확장하기'는 『Other Resiedence Other Locality(아더 레지던스 아더 로컬리티)』라는 전시 제목으로 협력큐레이터 채은영의 기획으로 인천아트플랫폼 인근의 외부 전시 공간인 차(茶) 스튜디오(인천시 중구 신포로15번길 58)에서 진행된다. 인천아트플랫폼 레지던시에 입주했던 작가 중 인천아트플랫폼 인근 또는 인천 중구에 모여든 예술공간과 소그룹 활동에 주목하여 조명하는 전시로 이들을 맥락화하는 과정을 통해 인천의 장소성을 부각시키는 동시에 그것을 동시대 맥락 속에 재위치시키고자 한다. 섹션 4. '기록하기'는 2009년 개관 이후부터 현재까지 지난 10년간 진행해온 인천아트플랫폼의 사업과 다양한 자료, 레지던시 프로그램에 참여한 입주 작가를 한눈에 보여 주는 아카이브 전시이다. 이 전시는 인천아트플랫폼을 거쳐 간 300여 팀의 예술가들이 함께하는 것의 중요성을 인식하고 예술가들의 인터뷰를 통해 1년간의 레지던시 프로그램이 그들에게 미친 긍정적 의미를 살펴본다. 또한 동시대 예술 흐름을 선도하는 작가들이 생각하는 동시대 예술의 정의를 함께 공론화함으로써 다양한 예술에 대한 단상을 공유해 보고자 한다. 섹션 5. '장소의 경험' 은 인천아트플랫폼의 건축적 의의를 재조명하는 전시로 설립 당시, 황순우 건축가가 건축 마스터로 활동하면서 기록, 수집, 사용한 조성 관련 자료들을 선보인다. 과거 사진과 영상, 조성 당시의 모형 설치물 등을 통해 시간의 흐름 속에 길(Street)로 존재하는 인천아트플랫폼의 변화 모습과 과거와 미래를 연결하는 현대적 건축 언어를 살펴볼 수 있다. ● 인천아트플랫폼은 지난 10년간 지역 안에서 글로벌 미학을 실험하는 국제 레지던시로서의 위상을 제고해 왔다. 인천, 원도심, 개항장이라는 도시적 특성으로부터 이제 10년의 역사를 넘어 국제 레지던시를 지향하는 동시대성과 나아가 세계성이 만나는 초국가적 네트워크로서의 공간으로 작동하고 있다. 예술가 창작지원과 원도심 도시개발 정책의 지역 재생, 시민문화 향유를 목표로 설립된 인천아트플랫폼은 이곳에 머물며 다양한 예술의 대안을 모색해온 오늘날의 예술가들에게 자신만의 예술세계 구현이 아닌 시각예술을 넘어선 장르, 이질적인 성격의 주체들, 수요자와 네트워크를 통해 확장된 개념의 예술로 나아가는 동력을 제공하였다. 또한 지역과의 관계망 안에서 지역의 고유한 가치와 특성에 주목하고 주민의 참여를 통한 문화의 다양성을 생산해 나가고 있다. 이러한 활동들은 그 자체로 예술에 대한 접근을 유도한 뿐만 아니라 인천 원도심의 지역 환경을 개선하는 데도 기여하였다. 인천아트플랫폼 10주년 기념전은 발화하는 장소에서 실천하는 장소로서 레지던시 입주작가들의 시각예술 작품과 기록, 그 변천의 과정을 통해 동시대 예술의 가변성과 역동성을 강조하였다. 인천아트플랫폼이 지역성과 동시대 세계성이 만나는 이동과 유동의 정치학으로 새로운 예술형식과 태도, 새로운 예술 주체의 등장을 응원하며 예술의 공명이 끊이지 않는 광장이 될 수 있기를 기대해 본다. ■ 인천아트플랫폼

We began from the Agora ● 2019 marks the 10th anniversary of the founding of Incheon Art Platform. Its commemorative project 'Overdrive 2009-2019' will be held from Sep 25 to Oct 27 throughout the IAP. Its title 'Overdrive' indicates an accelerating equipment to boost a starting device and this term suggests IAP's new transformative energy and dynamic vision by grafting this progressive spirit in that boosting into art. At the same time, the term points to the institution's potentiality to evolve, expand and spread as a creative space while it implies the difference residing in Incheon and cultural diversity based on that very difference. The commemorative project 'Overdrive 2009-2019' consists of exhibition, opening ceremony, international symposium and citizen participating program. Commemorative exhibition Overdrive 2009-2019 : traveling subjects, creators, experience of places aims at examining a creative space's process of transformation and its aesthetic phenomena while experimenting art's dynamics and possibility. The exhibition studies the transformative process caused by 300 travelling artists' staying, the circulation of creative activities' appearance and disappearance, as well as the fast-changing contemporary art's processes of repetition and renovation. ● As the title of 10th anniversary's commemorative project implies, the project has a purpose of examining cultural diversity within the locality as well as IAP's new transformative energy and dynamics. This intention is visualized in the exhibition with 5 sections. A total of 5 small exhibition halls are separate spaces, but linked, as they clearly distinguish from each other having each different purpose. This exhibition is fluid, immediate, contemporary and provides multiple creative spectra instead of focusing on the theme. The exhibition starts from IAP Building B Gallery. ● Section 1. 'On the Agora' invited recommendations, by domestic advisory committee members, of contemporary visual artists who can express dynamic transformative messages among IAP's resident artists. Most of the works in the exhibition express criticism of system and of convention, political participation, creative activities as well as movement toward change and innovation concentrating on new aesthetic value. While Choi Sun doubts about visual vision represented in aesthetic paradox, Kim Kira, Sim Seungwook and Hwang Moonjung deal with individual and collective desires, the gap and lack between them lay in the bottom of the capitalist social structure. Mackerel Safranski's drawings portray desires around the situation of the times and physical violence. Lee Chang-Hoon reveals hidden intention of individuals and their desires in order to body forth society, history and time and Jo Haejun examines multiple borders drawn between generations by personal memories and narratives. Sascha Pohle reinterprets indicators within the difference between awareness and culture while Kim Siha shows the gap between that difference and distinction. Jun So-jung and Klega visualize their messages on social issues like human rights, refugee, disparity, border and state power. Oh Jaewoo, Youn Juhee, Im Youngzoo and Jung Haejung, at the same time, deliver hopeful messages about change and will for newness following aesthetic events dealing with clashes and harmony. ● Section 2. 'To Propose' is a project to reveal the placeness of IAP as an extension of the Section 1 by expanding multiple media to study cultural diversity. Klega's Everystate installed as a huge banner outside the building patternized the one States of exception installed inside the IAP Building B Gallery which expresses reorganization of the country's location and borders under the capitalist power structure. Another outdoor work, Hong Jiyoon's Chimney Chim Chim Cher-ee links the elevator structure with the exhibition theme and proposes the linkage as a chimney that supplies power to the Platform with ornaments of flowers, birds, colorful images and their crossing meanings. Along with the exhibition, as a way of connecting Incheon citizens and the public, there will be Woopsyang's participating performance '2019 Incheon Space-out Competition' and IAP Building E Window Gallery will hold the photography exhibition presenting photos from Play Platform Puzzle which was the citizen participating event run in last August. Like a puzzle, small parts assemble to create huge figure as all expected, the project aims at completing the whole 10 years with numerous citizens and their stories accumulated from IAP's opening in 2009 to the present in 2019. ● Section 3. 'To Expand' will be held in the gallery near but outside the IAP, Cha Studio(58, Sinporo 15beon-gil, Jung-gu, Incheon). The exhibition illuminates artists who participated in the residency program of IAP, especially who gathered for small group activities and creating artistic spaces in Junggu area. Contextualizing these artists, the exhibition highlights Incheon's placeness and relocates it within contemporary context. Section 4. 'To Record' is an archive exhibition showing multiple projects that IAP has proceeded for last 10 years since its opening in 2009 till today, and all the resident artists joined residency program at a look. This exhibition emphasizes the importance of being together through about 300 artist teams's experiences and listens to their voices by interviewing them how the one-year residency program affected in a positive way. At the same time, the exhibition aims at sharing their thoughts on various arts by defining the contemporary art as leading contemporary artists by themselves. Section 5. 'Experience in Place' sheds new lights on IAP's architectural meaning and presents recordings, collections, used data for construction collected by the architecture master Hwang Soon-woo at the time of establishment. With photos and videos in the past, and model installations back then, the audience can see modern architectural language connecting the past and the future along with IAP's transformative scenes functioning as a street in the passage of time. ● IAP, for last 10 years, has raised its position as an international residency experimenting global aesthetics within the locality. As a space furnished with supernational networks where the globality and contemporaneity meet, the institution has worked to become an international residency with its 10-year history having the urban characteristics like Incheon, the original city center and the open port. Established to support artists's creative works, regenerate the locality with old city center's urban development, and provide citizen culture, IAP has offered the power for the artists who have searched for alternative arts during their stay at the institution, to move forward to expanded concept of art, which is not just one's own presentation, but a genre beyond visual art, subjects with heterogeneous natures, utilizing the network activated by people who demanded the art. At the same time, the institution has produced cultural diversity with residents' participation focusing on local's original value and characteristics. These activities have not just caused people's approach toward art itself, but also contributed to enhance Incheon's old city center's local environment. IAP's 10th anniversary's commemorative exhibition emphasizes variability and dynamics of contemporary art showing the process of transformation from the place of speaking to the place of practicing with resident artists' visual art works and records of them. We hope for IAP to keep supporting new art forms, new artistic attitudes, rising of new artistic subjects while it exists as a space where the locality and contemporary globality meet in fluid politics, so it finally becomes a plaza in which the art resonates endlessly. ■ Incheon Art Platform
