Vice Versa 거꾸로 바로 되기

본 프로젝트는 현대예술의 다양한 현상들을 깊이 있게 탐구하고, 새로운 경향의 장르 융합적 콘텐츠를 창작하기 위해 기획되었다. 시각 및 공연예술 분야의 전문 예술가 단체와 전문가들의 협업, 과학과 예술의 창의적 융합을 통해 현대예술의 다양한 가능성을 실험한다. ● Vice versa 프로젝트는 인간이 지구라는 물리적 환경에서 진화하며 살고 있다는 사실에서 출발한다. 한나 아렌트가 인간의 조건에서 선언했던 것처럼, 인간의 제1조건은 지구에서 살고 있기 때문에 경험하는 중력이다. 마찬가지로 우리는 지구에서 태양과 달, 낮과 밤 같은 이항대립의 조건 속에서 살고 있다. 지구에서 살고 있는 생명체의 정보를 담고 있는 DNA도 아데닌(A), 티민(T), 구아닌(G), 시토신(C)이라는 네 개의 염기로 되어 있지만, 아데닌은 티민과만 결합하고 구아닌은 시토신과만 결합한다. 그래서 DNA 이중나선 구조 중 한 쪽의 정보만 알고 있어도, 다른 쪽의 정보를 역추적할 수 있다. 이런 두 개의 짝이 상호작용하면서 사물과 생명체를 만들어내는 방식은 널리 존재한다. 양자역학의 고전적인 주제인 빛의 이중성(입자성, 파동성)에서부터 동아시아에서 세상을 설명하는 음양(陰陽), 노자 『도덕경』 40장에 언급된 반자도지동(反者道之動), 레비 스트로스가 『야생의 사고』에서 언급한 이항대립까지 자연의 많은 현상과 인간이 만들어 낸 많은 문헌에서 그 사례를 찾을 수 있다. ● 지구라는 물리적 환경에서 진화하며 살고 있는 인간의 인지 체계는 태양과 달, 낮과 밤, 지구의 자전과 공전 등 지구라는 우주적 특성에 맞추어 발달해 왔다. 인간의 인지 체계를 넘어서는 우주는, 유전자 결합 방식인 '선택적 스플라이싱(alternative splicing)'처럼 선택적으로 무수히 많은 조합들이 가능한 세계이다. Vice versa ('반대도 마찬가지'라는 뜻의 라틴어)는 생명의 탄생과 죽음을 다루며, 서로 보완적인 관계에 있는 통합적 세계관을 바탕으로 공간, 빛, 사운드, 몸의 움직임 등을 다양한 예술 언어를 통해 실험한다. ● 프로젝트에 참여하는 작가들은 이처럼 두 개의 요소가 상호작용하는 특성에 주목한다. 또한 인간의 진화적 적응과 한계를 인식하며, 우주의 수많은 조합 가능한 세계를, 그리고 생명의 탄생과 죽음을 상호보완의 통합적 관점으로 바라본다. 본 프로젝트는 이러한 성찰에서 출발해, 동시대의 다양한 새로운 예술적 시도들을 통해 실현하고자 기획되었다. ● 본 프로젝트는 크게 전시와 공연으로 구성된다. 전시와 함께 진행되는 세 번의 공연 퍼포먼스들은 형식적으로는 설치, 영상, 조명, 미디어아트, 음악, 사운드, 오브제 등의 협업작품들이 전시되어 있는 '전시장'이라는 물리적 공간에서 이루어지지만 전시와 공연은 별개의 작품이 아닌 유기적으로 연결된 하나의 창작품이다. 프로젝트의 제목 'Vice versa'가 담고 있는 통합적 관점은 협업과정에서 도출되는 모든 상호작용의 과정을 포괄한다. 본 프로젝트는 무대를 기반으로 활동하는 공연 예술가들과 전시장을 기반으로 활동하는 시각예술가들이 참여한다. 그렇기 때문에 본 프로젝트는 서로 다른 작업 구조와 협업의 의미들이 겹쳐지면서 미장센과 설치미술의 경계를 넘는다. ■ Vice Versa 기획팀

This project is designed to explore various phenomena of contemporary art in depth and to create a new trend of convergent content. We are comprised of professional artists and experts in the field of visual art, music, and performance art. We also collaborate with scientists and suggest a new possibility of contemporary art. ● This project, Vice Versa (named after the Latin phrase "the opposite"), starts with the fact that human beings live and evolve in the physical environment of the Earth. As Hannah Arendt declared in her book, The Human Condition, the first condition of humanity is gravity due to living on the Earth. We also live in the conditions of binary opposition, e.g., the sun and moon, day and night. For instance, the DNA that contains information on living organisms has four bases: adenine (A), thymine (T), guanine (G), and cytosine (C). Adenine combines only with thymine and guanine combines only with cytosine. So if we know a single strand of DNA double-helix structure, we can trace the other strand. There are a variety of ways in which these binary partners interact to create living things. By the same token, we can find the principle of binary opposition in many contexts: (1) the duality of light (particle and wave) in quantum mechanics, (2) "the reverse of expectations is the Tao in action" in chapter 40 of Tao Te Ching by Lau Tzu, and (3) the analysis of totemism in The Savage Mind by Claude Lévi-Strauss. ● The human cognitive system that evolves and lives in the physical environment of the Earth has evolved according to the characteristics of the universe. Beyond the human cognitive system, the universe is a system in which countless combinations are possible, such as the gene-binding method of "alternative splicing". In this concept, we experiment with various artistic languages in the fields of visual art, installation, sound art, light, dance, and performance. ● The artists participating in this project focus on the characteristics of binary opposition as the interaction between two elements. We understand evolutionary adaptation and the constrained environment. We also recognize a number of combinations in the world and in life in respect to the complementary and integrated perspective. Reflecting this, the Vice Versa project is designed to be realized through novel artistic works. ● The project consists of an exhibition and three performances. The performances are held in a physical space in the exhibition hall, named the "white box". The choreographers and dancers perform in the white box, which also contains artistic works such as installation, video, lighting, media art, music, and sound. This performance is not a single work; it is a novel and convergent work. The integrated view of Vice Versa encompasses all the processes of interaction that derive from the collaborative process. This project is a collaboration of performing artists who work on a stage basis and by visual artists who work on an exhibition hall basis.
