아쿠아 천국 Aqua Paradiso

『아쿠아 천국』은 '물'에 관한 이야기이다. 오래전 인간이 자연을 신의 섭리로 이해하던 때, 물은 인류에게 경외와 감사의 대상이었다. 홍수, 폭우, 태풍, 지진해일 등을 인격화된 신의 감정적 산물이라 여겼으며, 단비와 샘물은 신이 주신 생명수로 받아들였다. 자연 앞에서 인간은 왜소하고 나약한 존재였고 자연의 거대함은 '숭고함(Sublime, 서브라임)'으로 상징되었다. ● 그런데 자연이 가졌던 '숭고함'은 인류세가 도래하며 사라져버렸다. 산업혁명 이후 탄소 배출량이 폭증하고, 생태계가 교란되고, 야생의 경계가 무너지며 각종 전염병이 주기적으로 창궐하고, 농지와 산림의 사막화가 가속되면서 자연은 더 이상 신비로운 경외의 대상이 아닌 보호해야 할 대상, 나약한 거대 타자, 통제되지 않는 위기가 되어 버렸다. ● 선사시대 노아의 방주 홍수와 2019년 베니스를 휩쓸었던 대홍수(Acqua Alta)는 서로 매우 다른 의미가 있다. 노아의 방주 홍수는 신의 노여움과 심판, 참회와 용서라는 의미를 내포하며 '숭고함'을 극대화 하는 반면, 베니스 홍수는 인간이 뻔히 알고 저지르고 있는 이기적인 행위의 결과가 인간에게 부메랑으로 되돌아온 대참사이다. 이 모든 비극의 원인 제공자는 결국 인간이다. 인간 욕망을 충족하기 위하여 자연을 수탈의 대상으로 삼았기 때문에 나타난 현상이다. ● 『아쿠아 천국』 전시는 '물'이라는 생명의 원천을 현대 시각예술을 통하여 다각도로 조명함으로써 자연이 가진 잠재력과 '숭고함'을 상기시키고자 한다. 이를 통하여 인간, 자연, 우주의 생존과 균형 유지를 위하여 '물'이 얼마나 귀중한 존재인지 재인식하고 마음에 담는 기회를 갖고자 한다. ● 국내외 현대미술 작가 11명이 참여하는 이 전시는 인간이 신화와 전설의 시대를 살아갈 때 등장한 '물', 식민지 수탈의 역사를 함께한 '물', 인간 무의식에 존재하며 서사를 창조하는 '물', 자연생태계의 균형을 맞추는 절대 조절자로서의 '물', 우주를 구동하는 물리학적 유체로서의 '물', 치유자로서의 '물' 등 다양한 물의 서사를 소개한다. ■ 이기모

Aqua Paradiso is a story of "water." Long ago when humans understood nature to be the trust in Divine Providence, water was awed and appreciated. People thought of natural events, including floods, heavy rain, typhoons, and tidal waves, as the products that stemmed from the emotions of God, while understanding timely rain and spring water to be the water of life. Held in front of nature, humans were small and vulnerable and the greatness of nature stood for "sublime." ● However, such a "sublime" aspect of nature disappeared in the advent of Anthropocene. After the Industrial Revolution, nature has no longer become something miraculous to be awed: CO2 emissions skyrocketed, the ecosystem was disturbed; the boundary between the wild fell apart; various infectious diseases broke out on a periodic basis; and the desertification of farmland and forest accelerated. Through such a phenomena, nature has turned to be something protected, the weak and the grand other, and crisis beyond control. ● The flood from Noah's Ark in prehistoric times and Acqua Alta that flooded Venice have entirely different meanings. The flood from Noah's Ark implies the meanings of the wrath and judgment of God, and the repentance and forgiveness to maximize the "sublime" whereas the flood in Venice was the disaster in which the results of the selfish deeds that humans shamelessly performed were boomeranged. It is indeed humans who have served as the contributor to all of these tragedies. This phenomena was caused by humans who exploited nature to satisfy their desire. ● The exhibition, Aqua Paradiso, intends to remind humans of the potential and "sublime" aspects of nature by examining "water," the source of life, from various perspectives, through contemporary visual art. In doing so, we aim to rediscover and bear in mind how precious water is for the survival of humans, nature and the universe and the balance among them. ● The 11 local and foreign contemporary artists participate in this exhibition to introduce a variety of narrations centered around "water" that first appeared when humans lived through the era of mythology and legends, accompanied humans along the history of colonial exploitation, creates stories while existing in the human unconsciousness, serves as the absolute regulator to strike the perfect balance in the natural eco system, drives the universe as a physical organism, and plays the greatest role as a healer. ■ Gimo Yi
