밤섬 Bam Islet

'돌격 건설'이라는 기치를 걸고 자행된 여의도 개발 사업에 의해 밤섬에 살던 400여 명의 주민들은 강제 이주되었고, 1968년 2월 마을은 폭파되어 윤중제 공사를 위한 골재를 제공한 뒤 한강 위로 몇 개의 바위 덩어리만 모습을 드러낸 채, 우리의 기억에서 잊혀갔다. 그 후 50년이 넘는 긴 시간 동안 밤섬은 자연 복원되어 2012년 람사르 습지로 지정되었다. 이 지역은 의도치 않게 도시의 한 가운데 남겨져 스스로 자라난 이 도시의 그늘이자 유산인 셈이다.

서울에 살면서 어린 시절부터 밤섬을 봐온 나는, 누구나 알고는 있지만, '감각할 수 없는 미지의 영역'으로써 이곳이 궁금했다. 이후 오랜 시간 공을 들여 서울시로부터 촬영 허가를 받았고, 2011년부터 '인간이 파괴하고, 자연이 복원한 섬'에 배를 타고 들어가 무질서한 자연과 그 뒤로 보이는 작은 도시 생태계를 사진으로 기록하였다. 진정한 의미의 '공존'은 서로의 존재와 가치를 정확하게 인식하고 있을 때 비로소 가능해진다. 우리가 알던 밤섬은 철새도래지에 불과했지만, 밤섬은 이제 '생태도시, 서울'을 꿈꾼다.

김승구는 사회적 모순 속에도 조화를 이뤄가는 환경과 공존의 방법을 찾는 사람들을 사진으로 기록하고 있다. 2012년 한국예술종합학교 전문사 과정을 마쳤으며, 『Better Days』(Filter Space, 시카고, 미국, 2019), 『Better Days』(The Korea Society, 뉴욕, 미국, 2019), 『밤섬』(KT&G 상상마당, 서울, 한국, 2019)등 다수의 개인전을 개최했다. 2020년 영국의 Life Framer에서 Martin Parr에 의해 First Prize 수상, 2019년 휴스턴 FotoFest에서 V&A Museum의 Catherine Troiano에 의해 Ten by Ten 선정, 2019년 Tokyo 국제사진공모에서 대상 수상, 2018년 KT&G 상상마당 한국사진가 지원프로그램에서 올해의 최종 작가로 선정되었다. ■ 서울시청 하늘광장 갤러리

The Yeouido development project conducted in the construction boom forced around 400 residents who had lived on Bam Islet (Bamseom) to move out. In February 1968, the village on the islet was blown up. After that, Bam Islet provided aggregates for the construction of ring bunds. Then, the islet left a couple of lumps of rock in the Han River (Hangang) and had been forgotten. For over 50 years, untapped Bam Islet had been restored by nature and was finally designated as one of the Ramsar Wetlands in 2012. This islet, unintentionally left in the middle of the city, displays a darker side of Seoul and simultaneously represents the city's heritage. ● Having lived in Seoul since childhood, I have always seen this islet. Since Bam Islet can be seen easily from Hangang Park, most Seoulites know it. However, no one is allowed to visit there. I was curious about what it would be like to get in there. After several attempts, I managed to get permission from the Seoul Metropolitan Government to photograph the islet that was destroyed by humans but restored by nature in the end. I took a boat to get there and took photos of the islet's wild nature and hidden urban ecosystem. The actual "coexistence" becomes apparent only when you accurately recognize others' existence and values. We all know Bam Islet is just a habitat for migratory birds, but Bam Islet, taking a breath in the city, dreams that Seoul will become an ecological city. ● Seunggu Kim photographs people looking for how they harmoniously coexist with the environment amid social contradictions. He earned his Master of Fine Arts degree in visual art from the Korea National University of Arts in 2012. Kim held several solo exhibitions, including "Better Days" (Filter Space, Chicago, USA, 2019), "Better Days" (The Korea Society, New York, USA, 2019), and "Bam Islet" (KT&G, Sangsangmadang, Seoul, Korea, 2019). He won the First Prize at Life Framer by Martin Parr, a British documentary photographer, in the United Kingdom in 2020 and the Grand Prix Winner at the Tokyo International Photography Competition in 2019. He was selected as the "Ten by Ten" by Catherine Troiano of V&A Museum at FotoFest in Houston in 2019 and as Korean Photographer's Fellowship-Final Artist of the Year by KT&G Sangsangmadang in 2018. ■ SKY PLAZA GALLERY
