CR Collective 씨알콜렉티브는 오는 2022년 9월 1일부터 10월 1일까지 장진승 개인전 『L·A·P·S·E』를 개최한다. 옴니버스 영상과 AI 로봇 프로토타입이 포함된 2점의 디오라마 설치 작품으로 구성된 전시에서 테크놀로지로 인해 가상과 현실의 경계와 시공간의 선형적 배열이 해체된 탈인간중심적 세계관을 제시한다. ● 저속 혹은 고속 촬영하여 줄어들거나 늘어난 초당 프레임을 한정된 재생 시간 안에 넣는 방식의 타임랩스(time-lapse), 하이퍼랩스(hyper lapse), 슬로 모션(slow motion)과 같은 촬영기법은 시간의 선형적 배열 법칙 안에서 그 길이를 임의로 줄이거나 늘린다. 장진승은 이 개념을 빌어 시공간의 두 지점 사이의 흐름과 확장 혹은 축소하는 간극에서 벌어질 법한 시뮬레이션을 실험한다. ● 산업혁명 이후를 인류세로 일컫기도 할 정도로 인간의 활동은 다방면에 영향을 미치며 종류를 확장하고 반경을 넓혀 왔다. 인간 활동 확장의 중추로 볼 수 있는 기술의 발전은 시간의 흐름에 따라 가속하고, 더 많은 부분에서 유한한 신체를 대체하며 물리적 한계를 지워나간다. '실재'와 '가상'을 경계 짓는 것이 무의미해질 미래를 눈앞에 두고 있으며, 인간의 행위가 인공의 대체물로, 실존의 견고함을 의심해 본 적 없던 물질이 비물질로, 또는 비물질이 다시 물질로 중첩되는 상황은 충분히 예측 가능한, 이미 도래해버린 현실이다. 장진승은 지금의 현실에서 벗어난 시공간을 시각화하는데 그 근간에는 다시 현실이 놓인다.

『L·A·P·S·E』에 등장하는 로봇의 프로토타입은 뼈대와 외피가 나뉜 형상으로 인간의 골격과 그것을 덮고 있는 조직을 모방하는 휴머노이드(humanoid)이다. 장진승은 휴머노이드나 가상 공간을 구성하는 입자를 AI 파티클(particle)로 명명하고 이것이 종국에는 인간과 마찬가지로 그 자체로 존재하며, 스스로 움직이고, 자유 의지를 지니게 될 수도 있다는 가정하에 AI 파티클로 만들어진 가상의 시공간을 설정한다. 다만 창조된 시공간의 어느 부분에는 현실 감각을 밀어내고 자리한 기묘함과 같은 알 수 없는 정서나, 인체를 모방했지만, 일부 신체의 한계를 뛰어넘으면서도 인간의 당연한 움직임을 재현하리라는 기대에는 도달하지 못하는 대상이 존재한다. 영상 속 인물과 로봇, 여우와 비슷한 동물은 정체가 생명체 혹은 비생명체로 규정지어지지 않는다. 인간과 같은 본능과 감각으로 일이나 행동을 처리하는 자기결정권을 가진 존재가 아닌 입력값으로 도출되는 출력값의 프로세스로 움직이는 존재이지만 점차 자신의 일에 의구심을 갖거나 고민하는 단계로 넘어간 상황이 그려진다. 특히 로봇은 주어진 역할이 가중되고, 경계가 흩어져 무의미해진 상황에 당면하며 기계적으로 역할을 수행하는 것에 대한 의문을 품는다. 이러한 설정 안에서 현실이나 완전한 생명체가 등장하지 않지만, 시공간이나 인간, 로봇의 레이어가 중첩되면서도 완전히 융합되진 않은 과도기적 혼종성(hybridity)을 보여줌으로써 인간 중심주의가 해체되는 지점을 고민한다.

현실의 기술이 미래의 청사진을 확장할 기반으로 작용하는 것은 매우 자명하다. 기존의 테크놀로지를 사용하여 가설의 시공간을 물리적으로 만들어내는 과정에서 장진승은 기술을 적극적으로 활용하는 개인으로서 그것의 상상에 못 미치는 부진함과 한계를 온몸으로 체감한다. 그러나 이는 사실상 기술 발전의 더딤을 보여주는 것이 아닌, 하이테크의 공개와 독점의 간극에서 개인이라는 한계 상황이 우위를 선점할 수 없는 난관으로 작용하고 있음을 증명할 뿐이다. 작업의 과정에서 드러나는 간극은 인간과 현실이 대체되는 가상의 공간을 창출함으로써 결국 기술이 무엇을 위해 존재하는가에 대한 의문으로 이끈다. ● 장진승은 이번 전시에서 소개하는 신작을 통해 당대성이 소멸한 진공의 시공을 설정하고 핍진성을 불러온다. 과거 혹은 현재나 미래의 어느 한 시점을 지칭할 수 없는 시공간의 타임라인에서 벗어나 마치 부유하고 있는 듯한 지점에서 벌어지는 이야기는 당대의 현실에서 점차 흐려지고 혼재되어 가기 시작하는 실재와 가상의 무너진 경계에서 사실 같지만 사실 같지 않은 현실과 상상이 불분명하게 뒤섞인 시뮬레이션이다. 장진승은 여러 가설을 통해 우리가 예견하는 미래의 모습이 지금의 예상과 얼마만큼 닮거나 달라져 있을지 추정해 본다. ■ 씨알콜렉티브

CR Collective presents Jinseung Jang"fs solo exhibition L·A·P·S·E from Thursday, September 1 to Saturday, October 1, 2022. This exhibition consists of three videos and two diorama installations that include AI robot prototypes. It presents a post-humane view in which the boundaries between virtual and reality and the linear arrangement of time and space are dismantled as technology advances. ● Shooting techniques, such as time-lapse, hyper lapse, and slow motion, stitches reduced or increased frames per second created from low-speed or high-speed camera work in a limited playback time. These techniques arbitrarily reduce or extend the length of time in a linear arrangement. Artist Jinseung Jang uses this concept to experiment with the flow between two points in space and time and the simulation that may occur in the expanded or reduced gap between them. ● The post-industrial period often refers to Anthropocene, in which human activities have influenced the world in a myriad of ways, expanding the types and radius of human activities. The development of technology as the backbone of the expansion of human activity accelerates over time, replaces finite human body parts, and overcomes physical limitations. We are about to face an upcoming future where the boundary between "greal"h and "gvirtual"h becomes meaningless. Moreover, we are already predicting and expecting future situations in which human actions are replaced with artificial substitutes, solidly existing substances are superimposed with nonsubstances, or nonsubstances are reversed to substances. Jang, under this circumstance, visualizes time and space that deviates from the present reality, but the foundation will be placed to reality once again. ● The robot prototype in L·A·P·S·E is a humanoid that has separate bone and skin which imitates the human skeleton and its tissue structure. Jang names a humanoid or a particle that makes up a virtual space as an "gAI particle"h and establishes a virtual time and space created by AI particles, assuming that they eventually will exist as themselves, move on their own, and even have free will, like humans. However, in this space and time, there are unknown strangeness that push away the sense of reality or objects that imitate the human body but cannot fully reproduce natural human movements while overcoming some of the human body"fs limitations. Jang examines a spot where human-centric perspective is negated by showing transitional hybridity in which layers of space-time, humans, and robots overlap but are not yet completely merged. ● It is imperative that the present technology functions as the blueprint of the future. In the process of physically creating time and space by using existing technology, Jang as an individual realizes the obstacles and limitations of current technology fall short of his imagination. His frustration, however, does not actually demonstrate the slowness of technological development but only proves that the marginal and challenging situation of an individual located in the gap between the disclosure and monopoly of high technology. The gap revealed in the process of his work creates a virtual space where humans and reality are replaced with artificial substitutes, eventually leading to a question of what technology exists for. ● Through the new work introduced in this exhibition, Jang establishes the vacuum of time and space where contemporaneity has disappeared and evokes verisimilitude. His story takes place at a point floating away from a specific time and space which cannot be situated in any single point of the past, present, or future. It is a simulation blended with true-but-not-true life and imagination in the blurred boundaries between reality and virtual. Jinseung Jang through various hypotheses estimates how similar or different the future will be to our present predictions. ■ CR Collective
