김덕기의 '가족 그림'에 대하여 ● 김덕기는 여러 차례의 작품전을 통해 '가족그림'을 발표해오고 있다. 초기에는 정물과 인물과 같은 이미지를 통해 은유적으로 부부애나 가족애를 나타내기도 했으나 점차 풍경속의 가족그림으로 발전해갔다. 이제 '가족그림'은 엠블럼처럼 그의 작품세계를 대변하는 것으로 굳어졌다. ● 근작에서는 '바람의 기억'을 테마로 바람을 동력원으로 삼는 돛단배처럼 힘찬 여정의 출발점에선 사람들에게 희망의 메시지를 전하는 내용을 담았다. 그는 지금으로부터 10여 년 전에 이탈리아 아말피, 토스카나, 베네치아, 나폴리, 알프스 지역, 프랑스의 시골마을 등을 여행하면서 보고 느낀 풍광을 발표했는데 팬데믹 기간 중에 발이 묶이게 되면서 그때의 여행이 왜 즐거웠는지를 숙고해보았다고 한다. 여행은 좋은 경험이 되었지만 힘든 사람에게도 본인과 같은 경험을 그림을 통해 나누면 좋겠다는 바람에서 이번 전시를 준비하게 된 것이다.

잔잔하고 내밀한 작품의 분위기는 도트 패턴과 선적인 요인을 주된 조형언어로 삼아 생기발랄함을 더하고 있다. 또한 물감튜브에서 금세 쏟아져 나온 것 같은 구김살 없는 원색들이 보는 이들을 사로잡는다. 작가가 그려내는 세상은 칙칙한 흑백의 세상이 아닌, 기운 충천한 색깔로 채색된 환희에 찬 세상이다. 그의 그림에는 '응달'이 없다. 흡사 눈이 부신 아침의 햇살이 영롱하게 빛나듯이 반짝인다. 수 만개의 섬광이 수면 위에 움직이는 호수의 수정조각처럼 그의 그림은 기쁨과 생명으로 충만하다. 물론 그런 기쁨의 비밀은 가족에 있다. 작품의 주제는 가족의 범주 안에 있으며, 이점은 작품이 일관된 맥락을 띠고 있다는 뜻으로 이해된다. ● 그의 작품은 유화와 판화 외에도 캘린더, 시집, 교과서, 사보, 그리고 팬시상품으로 널리 유통되고 있다. 그만큼 대중적 인기가 높다는 이야기이다. 혹자는 그 원인을 색채의 달콤한 속삭임과 소박한 이미지 때문으로 볼 수 있으리라 생각한다. 필자 역시 이에 동의하면서도 그 원인을 회화 범위 이외의 곳에서 찾는다면 '가족애'를 생각하게 하는 따뜻함에 있다고 할 수 있다. ● 가정에 대해 중국이 '일가'(一家), 일본이 '가족'(家族)이라는 용어로 사용한다면, 우리나라는 '식구'(食口)라는 말을 사용해왔다. 즉 '한 솥 밥을 먹는 공동체'라는 뜻이다. 한 지붕에 사는 것과 한 솥 밥을 먹는다는 것은 차원이 다르다. 그만큼 한국에서의 가정 개념은 돈독하고 친밀한 관계성을 강조하는 편이다. 동양에서도 우리나라는 유독 가족적 유대를 강조해왔는데 근래에는 수천 년간 계승된 식사 공동체의 전통이 붕괴되어가고 있다. 가족은 불안하고 위험한 세상에서 자신을 보호받을 수 있는 안식처이다. 그런데 이것이 없어진다고 치자. 우리는 누구의 보호도 받지 못한 채 위태로울 것이다. 지금 우리가 직면하고 있는 최소 단위의 공동체의 와해는 심각한 사회적 문제가 아닐 수 없을 것이다.

다시 이야기를 김덕기의 작품으로 돌리면, 우리의 현실과는 사뭇 다른 풍경이 눈앞에 펼쳐진다. 루체른 호수, 젬파흐 호수, 몽블랑, 시옹성 등을 배경으로 요트놀이를 하거나 시골길을 자전거로 여행하는 가족의 모습이 펼쳐있다. 호수에서 보트놀이를 하는 장면을 자주 볼 수 있는데 여기에는 호수를 가로지르는 가족의 모습을 통해 희망을 말하고자 하는 작가의 의도가 개입되어 있다. 그 외의 작품들은 종래의 작품과 내용적으로 큰 차이가 없는 듯하다. 한 가족이 모여 식사를 하는 장면, 말 타기 놀이를 하거나 춤을 추며 한바탕 소란을 떠는 모습, 사랑스런 아내에게 꽃을 선사하는 자상한 남편, 엄마는 화분에 물을 주고 아이들은 그네를 타거나 자전거를 타는 장면, 아이를 품에 안고 책을 읽어주는 아빠 등등. 사람들은 그의 그림을 보며 '문화적 원형'을 떠올려보고 일부 사람은 우리가 너무 중요한 것을 잃어버렸다고 생각할 지도 모른다. ● 돌은 낙하하고 행성은 궤도를 돌며 계절이 바뀌듯이 가정은 남녀의 관계라는 보편적 질서에 기초하고 있다. 역사적으로 모든 문화는 보편적 질서라는 개념에 기초하고 있었다. 돌이 만유인력의 법칙을 거스를 수 없듯이 인간은 보편적 질서를 거스를 수 없다. 이를 방관하면 결국에 사회 질서의 전체적이고도 근본적인 해체로 귀결될 것이다. 따라서 우리의 임무는 창조된 모든 질서를 원상대로 회복하는 일이다. ● 김덕기의 작업은 무너지는 질서 속에서 무엇이 참다움에 이르는 길인지 알려준다. 김덕기 애호가들은 이점을 정확히 간파하고 있다고 생각한다. 그의 그림에서는 변함없이 행복한 가정이 그려지고 있다. 함께 있어야할 '사발과 대접'의 관계처럼 가족의 오순도순 살아가는 풍경이 그려지고 있는 셈이다. 그들은 의견차로 티격태격 할 때도 있지만 많은 시간을 함께 살아가면서 이해하고 관용하며 보듬어 안는다. 가족이라고 해서 어찌 좋은 시간만 있겠는가. 어떤 위기를 맞더라도 사랑의 끈으로 묶여져 있는 사람들은 이를 거뜬히 극복해갈 수 있는 것이다.

작품전에는 아이패드로 그린 그림도 첫 선을 보인다. 수묵과 채색에서 시작한 그가 캔버스 그림과 판화를 선보이더니 이번에는 아이패드 그림까지 섭렵에 나섰다. 선적인 효과를 살려 꽃으로 사랑을 표시하는 부부, 엄마와 꽃밭에서 놀이하는 아이, 즐거운 가족 캠핑 등의 장면을 볼 수 있는데 강이나 바다의 이미지를 배경으로 그 위에 얹혀진 선적인 드로잉으로 산뜻한 묘미를 살려내고 있다. 그가 시도한 아이패드 그림은 캔버스 그림과는 또 다른 느낌의 표현으로 다가온다. ● 재료와 매체는 달리하지만 그가 추구하는 세계는 동일하다. 그는 행복한 삶의 정경에 시선을 고정하며, 이것을 다채롭게 실어낸다. 어쩌면 그것은 우리가 원하지만 여러 가지 이유로 누리지 못하는 모습이기에 더욱 눈길이 가는지도 모르겠다. ● 물고기가 물을 떠나 살 수 없듯이 사람은 가정 공동체를 떠나 살아갈 수 없다. 한솥밥을 먹고 서로를 신뢰하며 조화를 이루고 살아가는 법을 배우기도 하지만 사랑을 듬뿍 받으며 사랑을 하는 법을 배우기도 한다. 그에게 가정은 단순한 혈연집단이 아니라 사랑을 나누는 공동체이다. 그의 그림을 보면서 필자는 가정은 생활을 배우고, 가치관을 배우는 핵심적인 현장 학습이면서 관계의 친밀감을 나누는 곳이 아닐까 하고 생각해 보았다. 그의 작품에서는 무엇보다 화목함, 곧 '친밀한 관계성'이 강조되는 편인데 약간 엉뚱한 상상일지 모르나 미지의 세계로 보물을 찾아 떠나는 중절모를 쓴 인디아나 존스처럼 진기하기만 하다. ■ 서성록

About Dukki Kim's Family Painting ● Dukki Kim has been presenting "Family Painting" through a number of exhibitions. In the early days, he expressed conjugal or family love metaphorically through still life and portraits, but his paintings gradually developed into a family picture in a landscape. Now, the "Family Painting" has solidified to represent the world of his works like an emblem. ● In a recent piece, he used the memory of a wind as a theme to express a message of hope to those embarking on a powerful journey, like a sailboat using wind as a power source. He released a scenery he saw and experienced while traveling to Amalfi, Tuscany, Venice, Naples, the Alps, and rural villages in France over ten years ago. While confined during the pandemic, he said he looked back on why his trip was fun. The trip was a good experience, but he prepared this exhibition in the hope that he can share the same experience with those in need through his paintings. ● The calm and intimate atmosphere of the work adds vitality by using dot patterns and line elements as the primary visual language. In addition, the bright original colors that seem freshly poured out of paint tubes captivate the viewers. The world depicted by the artist is not a dull black-and-white world, but a joyful world colored with energetic colors. His paintings do not have "shades." They shine like the morning sunlight that dazzles one's eyes. His paintings are filled with joy and life like a crystal sculpture of a lake with thousands of rays dancing on the surface. Of course, the secret to such pleasure comes from families. The theme of the work is within the category of families, and this can be understood that the work has a coherent context. ● Besides oil paintings and prints, his works are widely distributed in calendars, poetry collections, textbooks, newsletters, and stationaries. It means that his works are popular with the public. Some people may think that the reason is the sweet whispers of colors and the simple images. I also agree with this, but to find the reason outside the painting, I would say it's in the warmth that reminds you of family love. ● When referring to the term family in China as "one household" (一家) and in Japan as "house people" (家族), Koreans have been using the word "family member" (食口). In other words, it means "a community that has the same pot of rice." Living under the same roof and having the rice out of the same pot are fundamentally different. As such, the concept of family in Korea emphasizes a close relationship. Even among the Eastern countries, Korea especially emphasized family ties. Recently, however, the tradition of the dining community, which has been inherited for thousands of years, is being destroyed. Family is a haven where you can stay protected from an unstable and dangerous world. Let's assume that this disappears. We will be in danger without anyone's protection. The disintegration of the smallest community unit that we are currently facing is a serious social problem. ● Going back to Dukki Kim's work, it introduces us to a scenery that is quite different from our reality. His works depict a family traveling by bicycle on a rural path or riding a cruise in Lake Lucerne and Lake Sempach with Mont Blanc and Chillon Castle in the background. Viewers can often find the scene of a boat sailing across the lake, and the artist's intention to give hope through the image of a family crossing the lake. Other artworks don't seem to be much different in content from the existing pieces. A scene of a family having a meal together, playing horseback riding or dancing and making a fuss, a caring husband giving flowers to his lovely wife, a mother watering a flowerpot and children riding bikes or playing on swings, and a father holding a child in his arms and reading a book, etc. People would think of the cultural archetypes from his paintings and might think that we've lost something very important. ● As stones fall, planet orbits, and seasons change, family is founded on a universal order that is a relationship between a man and a woman. Historically, all cultures have been based on the concept of universal order. Like a stone that cannot defy the law of gravity, humans cannot defy the universal order. If this is ignored, it will eventually result in the overall and fundamental dissolution of the social order. Therefore, our duty is to restore all the created order to its original state. ● Dukki Kim's works indicate the way to reach the truth amidst the collapsing order. I believe those who are passionate about Kim's work see exactly that point. His paintings depict families who are happier than ever. Like the relationship between a rice bowl and a soup bowl that should be together, the scene illustrates the family's happy lives. There are times when they argue over differences of opinion, but they spend a lot of time together, understanding, tolerating, and embracing each other. How can families only have good times? Regardless of any crisis, people who are bound by the string of love can easily overcome it. ● In the exhibition, Kim also showcases his drawings on an iPad for the first time. He started out with ink and painting, then showed canvas paintings and prints, and now he went on to work on iPad drawings as well. The drawings use line effects to show a couple expressing love with flowers, a mother and a child playing in a flower garden, and a fun family camping. The line drawing on top of the river and ocean as the background brings out refreshing charms. The iPad drawing Kim attempted gives a different feeling from the canvas paintings. The materials and media are different, but the world he pursues is the same. He fixes his focus on the scenery of happy life and expresses it colorfully. Maybe we are drawn to his works because it's the experience we want but can't have for many reasons. ● Just as fish cannot live outside of water, humans cannot live outside of their homes. We have rice out of the same pot and learn how to trust and harmonize with each other, but we are also loved and are learning to love. For him, family is not just a group of relatives, but a community of shared love. Through his paintings, I think that a family is the core experience of learning about life and values ​​and where people share the closeness of a relationship. His works emphasize harmony, or in other words close relationships, more than anything else. It may be a bit of a fantasy, but they are rare, like Indiana Jones in his fedora, taking off to an unknown world in search of treasure. ■ Seongrok Seo
